Can you do me a favour?

If you go to Preferences, and then Audio, what's the lowest "output latency" you can achieve?

For me, the lowest I can get is 2.36ms .. how does this fare off?

It's almost barely audible but I know there's a very slight delay.. wondering if it's my audio interface.. using a line6 ux2..

I also can only achieve this through ASIO4ALL.. forget the native line6 drivers.. that's whats making me doubt the product itself.

Is 2.36ms decent?

To me this smells like bragging disguised as feigned ignorance. But I could be wrong.

I have around 14ms at the moment, but I don't usually notice any latency issues until I get above 20ms. Using a Cakewalk UA-25EX USB interface

i've got a latency of 11ms, i could get it smaller but live works comfortably in the studio and playing live at that setting

i'd be very surprised if you can hear a latency of 2.36ms
my apologies if you're autistic and can hear that kind of delay

Are we talking about the roundtrip latency or just input latency or what? As I recall usb and firewire devices have some sort of built-in buffer, which should be added to those figures (someone with more knowledge about these things correct me if I'm wrong), so therefore I take, it should be very possible, that you get disturbing latencies even though it would say no latency at all in the preferences.

I doubt very, very much that the reported 2.36 ms is correct (wouldn't be the first time Asio4All mis-reported latency).

It's a USB interface as others have mentioned and it's an old one to that. Going down to a stable 2.36 ms would probably make it the worlds fastest USB interface (and it's not!). At least if what you're talking about is what Live calls Overall latency (input + output latency, aka roundtrip latency).

Anyway, you'd have to be like batman or something to hear 2.36 ms of latency. In fact, many (most?) MIDI controllers have a higher latency even if you use their internal sounds. Few people can tell the difference when you get below about 10 ms (roundtrip).

I know the manual talks about near zero latency, but that's with direct monitoring, when the input of the interface gets passed directly to the outputs. Now that's the cool thing about that interface, since the amp simulation is done by the interface (with the aid of your CPU) and not in your host application (Live), you can monitor with the amp sims at near zero latency.

But the latency referred to for direct monitoring is NOT what you see reported in Live or in Asio4All. I'd say you can't count on getting much less than, say, 14 - 16 ms of (correctly reported overall) latency in Live with the UX2. A little lower with a very fast computer perhaps.

I've got 16.0 ms of latency. The interface is a Yamaha mixer which I've had for quite a while now so if there is actually a delay, I'm so used to it by now that I don't even notice it.

AD/DA conversion adds additional latency aswell, independent of buffer size. Live can not know about your ADDA delay.

Is that with one of them new USB interfaces of theirs? Then, like, WOW! Well, it's still like wow if it's FW or PCI.

To make this discussion useful though, we need some additional benchmarks, like x ms w/o any crackles with Live's CPU usage simulator at max (80%). And also, with what CPU.

I mean, I can go down to 4.97 ms overall latency with my Apogee One USB interface (which is probably the fastest USB interface next to the new RME ones) on a Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz. But I can't really use Live at that latency.

I got to get to 96 samples for a crackle free CPU test at 80% and that equals 8.68 ms of overall latency with that interface.

I can work perfectly fine in the real world at 64 samples/7.23 ms though, even when using quite a few quite heavy plug-ins. I can go even a bit lower if I want to, but 64 samples is my sweet spot, even if I go below that, I can no longer feel any difference in latency, even when I trigger Session Drums with my Roland TD12 e-drum kit (which obviously adds a bit of latency not reported by Live).

It's pretty interesting actually. Subjectively, below about 96 samples, I don't hear any latency - but when I play the drums, I can still feel it in my hands down to about 64 samples. It's as if the brain starts using my tactile senses as my "master clock" at about that point.
