Recommend me.....a Studio Chair !

Post by mholloway » Sat May 29, 2010 6:52 pm

For real.....Specifically, I'm interested in chair recommendations from those of you who are cognizant of the fact that hours and hours, days and days, years and years sitting in front of your computer/home music studio can quite likely cause dreaded Back Problems later in life (or now in life, for that matter). Or for those that already suffer back problems but know they're gonna sit for hours anyway....

Tarekith, I've seen your studio pics, that's a fancy ass looking chair....?

Specific recommendations and links would be great.

thanks!

Am interested in this discussion as well. I've tried traditional and comfort office chairs, drum thrones, piano benches, inflatable exercise balls, even floor seating, and have yet to find that perfect seat.

If you got the money look at Herman Miller. Definitely recommendable albeit a high price tag, as it's build quality will last you for years on end, contrary to some cheaper products! I personally recommend the "Celle" model!

Pricey but in the chair selection, it's so much right the "you get what you pay for"

i just went to several specialised office chair vendors and tried and tried until i found one that suited me.

i don't actually now the brand, but i am sitting comfortable and i am happy since.

i discovered that they can have massive differences, so i am not sure if a recommendation makes a lot of sense...

mine for instance might be totally uncomfortable for your body.

In all honesty though. I would say try to park yourself in as many chairs as possible and see what is comfortable. Sure you could spend 100's of bucks on a chair designed by a team of Nordic Engineers. Or you might by chance find a simple cheap chair that is right for you if you look around office supply stores.

That is how I found mine, and I love it.

Also I have heard that people have had great results with using exercise/aerobic balls to sit on in office environments.

Sounds strange but there is good reason why they are good for extended periods of sitting

Plus they are great to bounce of peoples heads. :)

A while ago I did some chair research on the web. Here's some reviews that might be helpful. I'm seriously interested in the ironhorse chair from ergonomic office chairs but the high price means I would have to wait. I couldn't find many reviews they claim to be used in many 24 hour control rooms. There is a trial period with option to return. To me the style of chairs from ergonomic office chairs appear closest to what seems comfortable over many hours.

A good chair could be justified in that it will probably last many years and prevent back and neck problems.

M- Mine's the Herman Miller Aeron, and I love it. Had one for years at my old day job, so I knew it was exactly what I needed in the studio. I found mine for about half price on Craigslist, but even at the (admittedly steep) retail price I think they are worth it. Some of the other Herman Miller chairs are nice too, but they're all pretty pricey.

I have an Aeron as well. Unlike many folks, I'm not all that keen on the look of the thing, but it's hard to beat on the durability and adjustability fronts.

The thing that always gets talked about with these is the price, and with good reason. However, one thing I never hear mentioned is the 12 year warranty. That's what you're paying for to a large degree.

I had the mesh back of mine replaced for free a couple of years ago. They just Fed Ex'd me a new one when the mesh started to wear through, no questions asked.

Then, a few months back, the seat mesh started to shred. The first guy I spoke with screwed up the repair order, so the second guy just sent me a brand new chair and reset the 12 year warranty for my trouble.

Meanwhile, I've gone through about 8 shitty office chairs at my day job over the years because they just fall apart. None of them were comfortable, and some of them cost as much as a bare bones Aeron.

I'm not shilling for this company, necessarily, there are other reputable manufacturers out there that offer good service. Like some other posters have said, I'd say just put your ass in as many chairs as you can to find the best fit. Also, make sure the vendor you use has a good return policy. It might take you a week of sitting in it to figure out that the chair isn't quite right for you.

Yeah, they are built really nicely, much heavier than you'd think by seeing all that mesh in pictures.

Totatlly, the base and supports are heavy gauge steel. I could sit here and bang it with a hammer all day and do no damage. The plastic and mesh parts (back, seat, armrests) are the replaceable bits.

Thanks for the ideas guys, it's very helpful. Going to look at some Herman Miller's and other stuff, that Aeron is crazy looking!

It looks like a motorbike saddle. I don't recall my testicles complaining when riding my bike, in fact I find it rather comfortable.
