installing live library to external drive??

hi i just recently purchased live8 suite and want to switch my library location to an external drive
but for some reason live freezes and says "there was an error while writing the file info/packages8_1.cfg"
whenever i try to install a pack.
i wanna move the library to reduce clutter on my laptop drive

specs: macbook pro 2010 model corei7 2.66ghz 4gb ram snow leopard 10.6.4 500gb drive space 5400rpm

I'd say it's a bad idea... no way to work with live without the external HD connected to it ? The library isn't that big for your internal HD capacity (: You better have your projects (that can get big) in your external hd and keep the lib on your laptop.
