Anybody own a Moog Voyager or Little Phatty?

Post by parma » Sat Jul 10, 2010 4:12 am

I'm this close to pulling the trigger on either a Voyager RME or a Little Phatty. Just wanted to get some opinions from current owners.

I've been thinking of getting an analog synth for awhile and had my eye on the Prophet 08 but I figured if I'm going to go analog, I might as well go really analog (no DCOs). Of course I'll have to give up the polyphony.....(and if anyone wants to sell me on DCOs NOT being inferior, please do).

Do the Moogs always sound like moogs or are the mod possibilities enough to get one out of traditional moog solo wankery (as seen on countless youtube videos). Do they stay in tune well or do they require frequent tuning? Does the Voyager offer enough extra capabilities to justify the difference in price between it and the Phatty?

Any opinions are welcome

I suspect the biggest question you have to answer for yourself is whether you are willing to live with a monosynth. That depends greatly on what kind of music you want to make with it.

funny you should say that - I just ordered a Prophet 08 Module

I'm a "pad man" mostly so I went with polyphony over "absolutely 100% analog". I probably wouldn't know a DCO from a well tuned VCO so I think I can get over that.

I've been listening to sound demos and watching god-awful youtube videos for the past week going back and forth between the P08, Little Phatty and Voyager. In the end, polyphony won out. That, and I got a good price on an "open box" P08 module.

Even though I've rendered the original intent of my post moot, I'll leave it be so people can feel free to tell me what an idiot I am for passing on the Moog stuff.

I love my voyager. My 2 fav synths in current production are it and the virus Ti2 polar. As for their flexibility in sound there are so many modulation possibilities that it's hardly a machine for creating one common sound. The interface destroys anything I know of. Everything right at your fingertips and amazing build quality.

I had a moog little phatty

And it was mint , tho i did sell it after a couple of years , as it served it purpose , i used it to write my hole album, it was amazing .

But the one thing with the phatty is it only 2 oscillators , the voyager has its it has the 3 oscillators , i would prefer that next time , more versatility

but sooooo worth the money , i eventually sold it to a mate , and now he is in love with it :D

and if you buy one for about 750 800 , you might only loose 150 /100 quid over a couple of years if you eventually want to upgrade to voyager .

but its an amazing toy !!

i learned so much about synths by using that , as it so simple and cuts out all the junk that get s in the way of you really getting to grip with synthesis .

hope this helps your choice

yes you are an idiot for passing on a voyager cos that is the real modern day analog monster....yes it has immense modulation capabilities...inspite all the lame ass youtube vids i went out and got a voyager old school without trial...now i know what analog sound means....
i cant tell u its flexible as fuck and it can sound totally unlike those cliched moog sounds...i made a lil vid a while back of a lil jam to see how strange i could make it sound for a 10 minute vid...heres what got recorded...

dave smith stuff really seems gr8 ....and im sure it sounds awesome....but with no fm capabilities (sept for filter fm i think AT LEAST) its definately off the list for me. i dont find the moog being mono a limitation..but now after hearing analog sound i would also want a nice poly to go the the mono for sound fx..leads, basses n all that mono is perfect..but its decided ill get a jupiter 6 when i i can afford to have a poly...had an old kinda broken jp8 in my studio for a bit....my god what a beast!!! 8O

That's the thing: I'm too interested in this kind of music to be really happy with just a monosynth.

I’m not a big fan of the DSI stuff myself. I’ve wanted to like them but I’ve been disappointed any time I’ve tried their synths.

The RME, on the other hand, really knocks me out. The sound drips with lush, warm personality and it does amazingly nasty noise as well. Get your CV on with the CP-251 and VX-351/2, stir in some Moogerfoogers and you’ve got a really interesting, flexible pseudo modular that sounds fantastic. Polyphony... not an issue for me, but I can see this figuring in the decision if it’s your only synth. I’ve paired the RME with a Virus TI and numerous softsynths, so I go outside the RME for polyphony.

All the best with the P08. Let us know how it works out.

I bought the little phatty used a little while ago and its pretty great, but you quickly realize after making your own sounds and tweaking presets that it is kind of limited on its own. I use it all the time for nice bass in my tracks, but after a while i crave something with more flexibility and a wider range of sounds.

I love my moog voyager. I've played the prophet and i suppose if you are really into pads it might be your thing but i just couldn't help hearing how much I preferred the voyager. just one note, but damn it's a good note.

yeah, polyphony was the deciding factor. I played with a Little Phatty for about an hour in a guitar center a couple months ago and while I liked the sounds coming out of it (particularly the immense bass) I found that it's sonic palette to be too limited for me. But for the stuff I do and the stuff I'm into, usually a simple triangle or sine (sub)bass patch is what I go for. I'm into lush pads and strings, so I figured I should go with the polyphony. Plus, from the video demos of the Prophet it seems to have a sonic character similar to the Oberheim stuff or even Roland Junos - those are more my taste rather than the moog "sound" - more brassy and buzzy.

This guys vids pretty much sold me on the prophet:

Anyway, it will be here wednesday. I'll give my impressions after a good go 'round.
