Best Guitar Amp simulator plugin to use in Ableton on Mac
Best Guitar Amp simulator plugin to use in Ableton on Mac
I am wanting to use some guitar on my live performances. I was wondering what the best guitar amp simulator plugin will be to use on Mac. Which is the most reliable. It is going to be for a live performance, so I want a plugin that is reliable and won't crash Live. I have heard of crash reports with Guitar Rig. What experiences have you guys had?

I really like IK Multimedia's Amplitube 3, but there are known stability issues with IK's plug-ins and Live, not yet resolved.

drop the mac, get a marshall

I already have a Fender 1969 Bassman amp. But I am so tired of getting it serviced, and thought it would be better to move onto amp simulation software. I don't like the sound of Marshalls anyway. Fenders have a better clean sound.
I like the sound of studio devil, but it is also a bit temperamental.

Guitar Rig is totally solid on my setup, Core2Duo PC with Vista Ultimate SP2 and 4GB ram with Live, Cubase, Renoise, Reaper - not one crash with GR4 or GR2. Amplitube 2 (haven't tried 3) gave me a lot of problems and I preferred Guitar Rig but this is all subjective.
This does not mean it will be the same for you - it has a demo. Demo it !
Magix's new Vandal amp sim is getting a lot of positive noise in reviews such as Sound On Sound August 2010. (not sure if it's Mac compatible though as it comes from Samplitude Pro, a PC only DAW).
*edit - just checked on my SOS esub, it's Mac and PC*

Of the ones I've tried, I have Amplitube 2 and it's quite good, as is Waves GTR, and Line6 Podfarm has nice effects. Guitar Rig us supposed to be good, they're probably all pretty decent for what they are. I recently saw Diego Stucco using Amplitube 3 on one of his homemade instruments/invenventions and that guy is the shit. So I'll be upgrading to version 3 when there is a sale, even though I prefer my amp & pedals, cos that made me think of using amp sims for effects processing at some point. IK did eventually fix the compatability issues with Live last time.
