I have $700 CAN, what to spend it on?

Post by BoxDJ » Sat Aug 28, 2010 3:29 pm

Here is what I currently own.:
-Live Suite 8
-Audiofire 4
-BCR2000
-Launchpad
-KRK RP6
-Microkorg

+ a bunch of free VST's

Here what I may consider:
-22-24 inch monitor (I am working on a 14 inch T400 Lenovo laptop)
-Mbase01 drum synth
-new midi keyboard (I only use the microkorg as a midi controller anyway)

I most likely going to buy a new screen and the Mbase01 anyway which still leaves me with around $100.

I will not:
-buy a new laptop (its only 1 year old)
-buy new monitors (about 2 months old)

Any advice?

Thanks

EDIT: I'm producing house, dance, tech house, electro, funk house, and various weird things if that matters. I also plan on doing live performances :p

I just bought a used Elektron Machinedrum UW and I can't believe how amazing it is. You can find deals of ebay often. It really is that good in person.

great advice here.
would be a great addition to your setup.

if you don't gel with it you should be able to re-sell it for the same money you paid for it, providing you buy sensibly in the first place...

MDuw + mbase01 = win

Keep the money in your pocket until you really NEED something in particular.

You could buy a nice microphone for that money, or a hardware synth or module.

It really depends on what you're doing music wise.

You could also spend it on something unsexy and unmotivating but which will reap rewards such as acoustic treatment etc.
You could buy some computer gear such more RAM and a terabyte external harddrive etc.

But until you really know what you want, keep it in your pocket and don't blow it on blow and hookers - that's fun for an hour and then the thrill is gone.

i would get a second monitor. yes i know live doesnt have two monitor support but having live on the bigger screen will be nice. if you arent using photoshop or other such stuff a decent cheap one would suffice. then you have money left over.

agreed on the monitor. I use a macbook, the 24 in acer is awesome to use, the macbook screen holds my floating plug-ins.

Then save the rest for something you need. start a separate bank account for gear purchases. Then when you need a sample set for a specific project you'll be able to get the job done. Have fun!

Akai MPK88, I second the notation.

If you're looking for a new midi keyboard, I would definitely recommend one of the Akai MPKs. I have the 61 key range keyboard, and I absolutely love it. The drum pads are really nice, too. The only thing that people seem to complain about with the keyboard is how the keys feel when you press down on them.

I upgraded from an m-audio oxygen49, so the keys were definitely an improvement for me.

You can get hookers for $10-15 here, maybe skanks but they blow as well as the $500 kind. go down Queen and Lansdowne and score some crack for similar

Leaving plenty for other purchases. If you don't know what you want, then wait, don't just blow it on an impulse and then find yourself listing stuff on ebay and getting half what you paid for it.
