What's up with the new boundary for fades?
What's up with the new boundary for fades?
I am sure it did not work like that in previous versions!!!!
If you have a looped audio clip in the arrangement, and if you want a long fade out, well you can't anymore cause the fade can't be longer than the last repetition!!!! ???? what's up???
anybody can comment on that?
...It happened in recent versions??? from 8.1.4??? I have never read such a change listed

Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
how can you automate a fade out if it's looped?
of course it's possible to fade out manually in this situation
because any drawn automation will loop as well...
it's possible with 'clip envelopes' ..
but the way you want it .. only in session view
where you can 'unlink' the envelope from the loop...
whereas arrangement view has only 1 loop brace.. and cannot be 'unlinked'..
naturally.. as there is only 1 timeline there..

Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
sorry, hard to explain, for exemple the 1 bar clip is just repeating itself for 16 bars, and you want a 4 bar fade out3dot... wrote:how can you automate a fade out if it's looped?
I taught that it worked before, no?
Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
no ... sorry.. all is working well
ehm...
forgive me but..
just to check... you've clicked the 'volume' box of the track...
you see a red line..(in the arrangement)
you double click on the red line to add 'breakpoints' and create the fade..
right?

I know I could have done a volume fade, but now I use "fades" for fades outs witch isn't that weird
Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
ok ... don't know about that..
but.. as far as 'fades'..
the 'fades' are supposed to help fade between clips .. I think..
and so it makes sense they are bound by the clip..and you should be able to fade out across 4 bars
some more questions:
when you say you have 16 'repetitions'..
do you mean you're using 16 seperate clips ?
or just 1 looped and stretched x16?
because it matters...
I'm asking silly questions cuz I can't see your set..

Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
I guess I never ran into this before, I have been mostly recording tracks for a long time so digital arrangement becomes fuzzy now... I would have to use a track volume control curve instead of those nice fades3dot... wrote: or just 1 looped and stretched x16?
Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
the fade button is a very small fade (like .1 millisecond or something) to avoid pops on clicks from starting on a non-zero crossing.
The fades feature in arrangement view is something different, but is still PER CLIP, so you could not have a four bar fade out across several clips with this feature. This is true even if it's the same clip looped.
Solutions:
Use clip envelopes, using the "unlink" function to make the envelope longer than the actual clip. Here's a great video showing some of this approach. http://vimeo.com/5962875
Use a utility or an empty instrument racks chain volume, and draw in your automation. there's a great link on a tutorial for this somewhere...
Use the track volume fader. if you don't know how to do this, please RTFM.
The fade feature is always quite finnicky for me. i want to use it but a lot of times i get strange behavior out of it and using two channels and drawing in all old skool like.

Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
No, fades have never worked across multiple clips. I guess this is to be expected but it would be nice if we could have a proper channel fade built into the clips that do cross multiple clips.
I do one of two things to achieve fade ups and fade downs. And I use a lot of fades in my tracks.
1. Consolidate all the clips you need to fade out. Then use the fade feature over the newly created super clip.
2. Use automation. Never automate the track fader. This makes tweaks later on more complicated. Instead use a dummy rack and automate the volume level of the empty rack. It would be nice to use the utility but the blighter doesn't go down to zero. And it would be nice to not have to draw in smooth curves either but I digress.

Re: What's up with the new boundary for fades?
..that I understood but in my case it's the same clip, just 1, looped for 16 bars. Intuitively it should work but yeah there is a limit for the fade to span only within the last repetition... guess I never ran across that beforeSynthbuilder wrote:No, fades have never worked across multiple clips.

thanks for your tips, that's pretty definitive and on target... what I like the least is adding points, then curve my fade point by point by hand as opposed to those nice fade curves who can really do the job in a pinch!!!!!
thanks for everyone who helped me out
