Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
hey all,
Pro Tools is the business for recording, and Live is the business for everything else.
I want to slave Pro Tools to Ableton.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a how-to guide?'
I can only find help with slaving Live to Pro Tools - which is more common, I guess, but the opposite to what I'm trying to achieve.
cheers

first of all... not it's not... they both record the same..
(rather than thinking that.. check your A/D converters.. and the signal chain from mic to them)
secondly... read-up on 'MIDI-SYNC'
Re: Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
cheers. wasn't referring to the sound of Tools vs Live at all. I prefer Tools for recording because of it's layout.
Midi sync? Really? I just want to reroute the audio of Tools into Live.
Ok, here's the full breakdown:
say I'm using Ableton for composing and jamming (using a soundcard dedicated to that), but I then want to record something over the top (using Pro Tools, the mic plugged in and ready to go at all times - using the Mbox Mini 2).
I want to continue monitoring through Live (with headphones, because I'll have an open mic in the studio now), but record with Pro Tools. So I want to send everything from the Master out of Pro Tools into an audio track in live.
I'll later polish the vocals in Tools (compressing, de-essing, EQ) before bouncing and bring it into Live as an audio file.
From what I gather, Tools will be the rewire slave, and Ableton the rewire host. I can't find any guides on how to set this up.
I hoped it would be as easy as opening Live first (as it's the host/master rewire application), opening Pro Tools, then sending the output of Tools' master channel to Live (hoping that Live would appear as an I/O option).... or in Live, looking for the Pro Tools' master channel.
But it doesn't seem to be that simple.

pro tools only works as a host so what you're trying to do cannot be done.

Re: Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
why not simply record the mic into live..
and then import the wave into 'tools.. for all that comping and eqing?
(although very much unnecessary...)

right, that explains a bit : )
Maybe I'll see if I can use soundflower to re-route the audio from Tools into Live.
where there's a will, there's a way!
Re: Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
or something along the lines of what 3dot said but record straight into pt, edit, bounce to live. should be fairly simple. or maybe rewire live into pt if you need the track playing and all until you're done editing in pt, then export and bring it all into live.
Re: Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
I'm stubborn.
I'm going to find a way to achieve this:
Audio of Pro Tools > Live
but Live's I/O will continue to be my external 4in/4out soundcard (so that I can continue using outboard effects units)
if it can't be routed in the world of software, I can always patch the L & R outputs from my mbox mini2 into two of my Audiofire's inputs, and then run that into a track in Ableton.

WHY ?
to what ends..?

Re: Slaving Pro Tools to Live (for vocals/recording)
PT can only host but... just use rewire?
Using rewire also gives you the advantage of getting over the PT track limit by running Live in through the Aux's.
You can go up to 100+ tracks if you need.

Protools cannot be a rewire slave as mentioned above. Most established DAWS such as Protools, Logic, Cubase, Sonar, Digital Performer etc can only be run as a rewire master.
Live, Renoise, Acid Pro, FL Studio, Reaper can be master or slave. Reason can be slave only.

Yes, I think that using rewire with PT as a host is as close as the OP will get to a solution.
