The 13 best free VST plug-ins in the world today

Post by Silwolffe » Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:16 pm

I know the title is subjective, but I found an interesting article from one of the newsletters I am signed up for. I haven't tried out any of the VST's yet, but I figured it would be something nice to share for those of you who are on a budget (like me!).

I wish Glitch was available for Mac soo badly.

I know there are alternatives, but I want Glitch :).

The list has some great plugins but does not mention any of Jeroen Breebart's free plugins such as Ferox and PC-2 Psychoacoustic compressor, nor does it mention any of Bootsy's Variety Of Sound plugins such as Density mkII or Nasty VCS.

Dasample Glaceverb is a good freebie reverb. Some of this stuff is PC only.

http://glenstegner.com/softsynths.html - has some good freebie interpretations of minimoog and arp2600 - nothing to worry Arturia or G-Force but it is FREE and not bad in that context.

Also, digitalfishphones plugins are great but a bit old and some may not work in Intel Macs (PC VST is fine) - the developer gave it up to develop plugins for Samplitude and Sequoia but his original freebies are amazing

any list without a mention of those two guy's work is lacking somewhat, i think.

Wish I'd read this a couple of weeks ago. Been going through all the recomended free VSTs for mixing and mastering (aramaturising). So far Bootsy's and Jeroen's seem to be best I've found. Going to upgrade the Red Phatt and Barricade to Pro version (10 euros each).

Not really done any maximising as I've not tried putting any of my music out there yet (after God knows how many years of dicking around). Do you rate Barricade? Not really sure if I'll need to splash out on Elephant or something. How much difference does it really make. Also in relation to Live's Limiter?

to me any new plug-ins of any kind = yawn

I think I wasted the first half of the decade fucking around with different VSTs off the internet and I have to say I feel at one with just Ableton suite and Komplete 6, my guitar and bass. There isn't much you can't do with that combo. I was happy with just Guitar Rig but now Ableton have even gone and chucked in an Amp sim as well.

I occasionally use waves for reverb or finishing touches/mastering but really I couldn't think of a single reason to waste my time looking at any more VSTs or AUs.

Sorry to hijack, just felt like adding that perspective. 8)

this.

I admire people who can follow the plugin trends AND make music. The two are mutually exclusive for me.

I really don't like Glitch - it makes everything sound like it was made in Glitch, if you get what I mean.
