Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
My drummer just got one and I haven't been able to look at it first hand, but does anyone here use one with Live?
My biggest question is if anyone sync's the MIDI clocks so you can use the phrase loop function on the Roland so it is in time with the loops created in Live. Anyone do this successfully?

Yep, this can be done easily. Hitting start in Live will start up whatever phrase you've got loaded up, assuming all the correct settings in the midi preferences are set.
Once the phrase is recorded, and three separate midi tracks are recorded in live, I can't then work out how to get these to trigger each individual parts in ableton though....

Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
I'm not really understanding this. I don't want to control the phrases created on the Roland from Live, I want my drummer to control those phrases. What I want to know is if anyone has sent a MIDI clock to the Roland so that it is quantized to the Live clock.pedroschki wrote:Yep, this can be done easily. Sorry, the second half of that was a different issue, so probably a little confusing - it's just something I can't figure out for myself...
But to confirm your question, yes, the SPD30 (and its phrase looper) syncs to Live's clock....

Is it quantized? Meaning, if I stop the phrase looper mid phrase:pedroschki wrote:Sorry, the second half of that was a different issue, so probably a little confusing - it's just something I can't figure out for myself...

a) go back to the beginning of the phrase when I start it again
b) start on the next 1 when I start it again
Also, thanks for answering these. I would like to test these out myself, but my drummer is being weird about practicing on a regular basis...
drummers...

Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
No problemo.
If you stop the phrase looper mid phrase, it will go back to the beginning of that phrase. Once you hit a pad again, it will trigger the phrase again, from the beginning, still in time with Live (assuming you hit it at the right time!)
Not quite sure what you mean about 'start on the next 1 when I start it again'?

Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
Meaning if I stop it and hit start again will it wait until Live is at '1' again before starting the loop. It doesn't sound like it from the previous post. Maybe there is a setting so at least it will start on the next beat.pedroschki wrote:No problemo.

No, it won't do that, I don't think there's setting which does it either... I may be wrong though, think if you go to Roland's site, they've got a manual which can be downloaded. May be worth checking it out.
Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
Thanks for the help. I'll check out that manual and try some stuff out this weekend.pedroschki wrote:No, it won't do that, I don't think there's setting which does it either... Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
Well, we figured out a solution and holy shit does this open up some possibilities. Basically, we don't sync at all. Instead we set our BPM's manually and our two systems stay remarkably in time just w/ my drummer playing to the click my system is sending him. He also got a Kaos Pad Pro which he does the same thing for and now we can bounce loops off each other, build up and take out parts more easily, and in general just make it more fun for the two of us. This shit is going to be off the hook. Plan is to record a practice session and see how it turns out this weekend. I'll post it up here when we're done.

Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
I gave up using USB, for some reason the latency was awful. Don't know if it's just my PC, as I can't get my BCR2000 working through a USB connection either. I now use a MIDI connection and that works fine.
Take it you've got all the ports set up in Live? Does it work at all? Or is it just out of sync?

Re: Anyone here own the Roland SPD-30?
i can link them up, but its just not synchronising! it just won't link up with the ableton tempo...
