world music scales + alternate tuning scales + microtonal??
Is this possible in live, to send midi data that comes from "non western" tuning scales??

as far as i remember - you need vsts that accept .tun files...
maybe you can route the output from these to others..
surely its easy for some max peeps to make a midi effect module for this...

it's a shame the pitch device only moves in semi-tones.
Only work around I can think of that doesn't involve MAX is making your own multi-instrument racks were you tune each individual note to your needs. Not exactly a quick fix though, is it

Are you on a Mac or PC? For Mac, there's LMSO X (www.nonoctave.com), for PC there's Scala (http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/). Both create all manner of tuning files for synths that will accept them. Live's synths don't accept any kind of tuning file, but LMSO X allows you to tune separate, monophonic instances (on separate tracks) of the Ableton instruments to create a workaround polyphonic microtonal instrument.greenscreens wrote:Is this possible in live, to send midi data that comes from "non western" tuning scales??

I don't have M4L so I can't comment on that, but I've heard there is great microtonal potential with it.
If you have Ableton's Sampler instrument, you can discretely retune each note using the key zones and detune sample parameters. A lot of people don't realize this about Sampler and have instead tried to use the ams files to go microtonal, but this is more involved and not as versatile. Granted, it's just easier to load a script into Kontakt, if you have it, but that's a whole other beast.

There's this:

I've never tried it, so I can't comment. I believe that LMSO X can retune some hardware synths.

Re: world music scales + alternate tuning scales + microtonal??
Sweet! Me wants.
Id love that thing as some kind of VSTi modifying software though. I only have 1 HW synth, rest is "in the box".
Edit: theres actually a couple of power-workhouse synths that use Scala: Alchemy and Omnisphere. I dont own any of those, but if this works out, I might exchange my Stylus RMX into one of them.

Re: world music scales + alternate tuning scales + microtonal??
a while ago i made this app that would allow for custom oscillators and wacky tunings in simpler/sampler, but i think i let that domain expire. i'll try to find the app later tonight and host it again and update the link.
there was a discussion brewing http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/11/1 ... r-sampler/ and http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?t=98303.

For anyone who's interested, I just uploaded my MIDI retuning patch which has some support for custom tuning scales.

Just released Retune for Live version 1.0, which now accepts scala files! Thanks for the recommendation Tagor.
