The best DJ software, in your opinion?

Post by Jome7 » Fri Dec 10, 2010 9:34 pm

The thing I want to get includes Traktor LE so I was looking forward to messing around with that, but now I found out that Deckadance works as a VST plugin. Can Traktor do the same, like the other NI software such as the Kore and Reaktor players?

I'm sure that either one will suit my needs just fine, but the idea of having it run as a VST and having a quasi Bridge-like integration with a Live set is luring me over to Deckadance.

No Traktor, does not work as a VST. However you can use soundflower or JackOSX to virtually route the audio into Ableton. However that ONLY works if you are not using timecode vinyl. My biggest frustaration with Traktor, is the FX can only be Post fader withing the program itself. Seems really stupid that there is not an option for post fader effects.

Ms. Pinky M4L device works as a plug in too, it's pretty cool.

I have never tried Deckadance.

Personally I am saving up for a Rane 57SL and getting into Serato/Bridge.

With the latest version of Serato, and the possibilities of the Bridge, I believe I will be happy to give up Traktor after years of using it.

Serato / Bridge.

For me, NOTHING beats real decks for DJing.

Yeah, Serato with The Bridge seems the way to go. I guess I should have asked the best software besides that, for those of us that can't afford it.

I use a perfect working selfmade digital dj setup.

Software:
Virtual DJ ( really no toy anymore)
2x Serato Vinyl from ebay
maya44 usb soundcard from ebay
2x phono preamps from local hifi store

= relyable, perfect working system.

I used Serato since the day it came out and I used the Bridge but I went to Traktor instead recently. There are just A LOT MORE options and tweaks in the program possible even not mentioning the recording options, broadcasting, midi controller setup, internal mixing, specific controller mayhem like the X1's, Xone's, faderfoxes, it depends a bit on your gear you use now or like to use in the future.

I play vinyl as well as 'all digital' sets and for pure vinyl sets Serato is a bit easier (especially the colored waveform).

On the other side, getting the Bridge to have a nice steady solid clock was a pain! in the ass and Traktor beats the hell out of that. You also loose a deck to Ableton !! It depends a lot on the style you play and in Traktor you loose the Ableton overview but I don't miss it one second since it's a little mess anyway.

The way my setup works now is normal 3 (not 4) deck usage of Traktor with Deck D as external audio. Midi clock is internally send to Ableton and Ableton is listening to Traktor (and it works flawless !). Master Audio of Ableton is then routed to Deck D in Traktor. And all outputs to my external 4 channel mixer. My iPad is using Touchable as a controller for Ableton and I'm planning to use the X1's on deck A and B and eventually a second one on deck C (right now I'm using a Nocturn).

Anyway, this leaves for FAAAAR more options and creativity within Ableton than using the Bridge. Since Touchable I don't need to look at Ableton for even one second !

I still like to play vinyl sets which I still can but boy, running Traktor and Ableton together and have full tweakability without even looking a one screen and running four decks with Traktors excellent looping and EFX section + all you want from Ableton makes you forget vinyl in the blink of an eye.

Also very small setup, laptop, 2 X1's and the iPad, .. done ..

Best DJ software?

Well, what's the best car? Best bread? Best jeans?

Ask a thousand DJs and get a thousand different answers.

It's down to personal choice. They all perform the same basic functions.

If you don't like the look, some can be skinned to look the way you want.

At the moment I run Atomix Virtual DJ Pro 7, PCDJ Dex and Gizmolabs RPM (nee PCDJ Reflex).

I have read that this is can be done...

i own a Vestax VCI100SE controller (ideal for Traktor with the latest firmware upgrade & mappings) and an APC40 (obviously ideal for Ableton) but would like to incorporate them both... at least try it out.

I know there is an article on DJ Techtools website, its from 08 - anything more recent????

I switched from Torq to Deckadance, and I think Deckadance is awesome. I've sampled Serato (too threadbare) and Traktor (too unintuitive for me). Deckadance FTW.
