I recently got a pair of Rokit 5 monitors and they're working out nicely. There's always a bit of personal taste involved, but I've read a lot of good press on the Rokit series which is why I got them.

Alternatives in a similar sort of price range are the Alesis Monitor 1 mkII or Behringer Truths, which I've also read good reviews about.

I'd honestly spend the money on headphones if that is your budget.. you will get a far more accurate mix with a fairly high end set with that budget.. as to monitors if you are only using them to play around with.. no real mixing, most in this price range will suffice... get the lower end of the big boys, you get some of the trickle-down benefits.. KRK, Mackie, Adam, Focal, Dynaudio. If you can work with headphones and send your mixes off to have them properly mastered, you will have a much better product than relying on yourself and a cheap pair of monitors.. trust me I know, I have Rokit 5's. I've since upgraded to Dyn's BM6's which I'd recommend along with any of the Focals. Lots of material on this subject in various forums.. Cakewalks forums, Gearslutz, KVR, etc.

I have the KRK VXT 6 and you cant go wrong. See if you can stretch your budget and go for the KRKs you can most afford.
