dubstep wobbles with xbox kinect

Post by encanti » Fri Jan 21, 2011 2:34 am

Encanti here. This is my first post because I finally have a nice contribution.

check it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqxUzhDIdqo

Freelance coder Jacob Fenwick got the Xbox Kinect sending midi CC messages to Ableton Live, and I programmed this sequence. In this example, we hooked up the y-axis of the right hand input to control the LFO frequency on some massive wobble synths.

If you like this, spread it around! :) Send me comments/feedback/ideas about where we should go from here.

That is super cool. The actual music made in the video isn't great, but as proof of concept, that shit is awesome.

Was there a lot of latency between movement and response? It sounded like it, but I couldn't tell if it was a factor of the tech or the instrument settings.

There's about 150ms of inescapable latency from the Kinect... so triggering "air drums" or something would be kind of lame, but sending CC messages seems to be ideal.

collab and battle at SXSW? I'm game! :D

It's really easy to develop a "preset" track for this thing. The kinect program is just outputting CC messages. In this example, we have the right hand Y axis controlling the frequency of LFO frequency on a couple synths. After a little while, we'll have three dimensions for each hand, plus head, hips, and legs if we want it.

Besides - gloves are so 2002. 0H SNAP!

lol j/k couldnt help it. I love gloves and accelerometer controls- soo much win. Seriously would love to talk about having an epic meet up during SXSW.
