Little tip I'd like to ask

Post by Romusc » Sun Jan 23, 2011 6:34 pm

Hello,

I have a question that I couldn't answer elsewhere.

Is there a way to automate the on-off of an effect in session view ?
I know how to automate effects in session view (as a percentage of the effect paramter), but I didn't find out how to automate the on-off function.

Basically on some scenes I would like the effect of the track to be on, and to be off on other scenes. Is there an easy way to do that ? The other alternative I guess would be to send the track to an effect track and automate the amount of 'send' (not sure I'm clear).

Thanks in advance!

The way i usually do this is on most effects there are a Dry/Wet knob. You can just automate that to 0 when you want the effect off, and 100 if you want it 100% on, or anything in between. Hope this helped!

The easiest way to do it causes some small sound artifacts on most on/offs. So let me give you a better way.

Find the tutorial for ableton wet/dry rack (will teach you important rack stuff)
Make that rack, throw your effect/rack into the wet chain

If you have the macro to chain selector set to dry the effect is 'off' and as you get wet it goes 'on'

The quick and shitty way is to group your effect (apple-g) then click 'map' then map on/off button to the macro 1 and chenge the mapping values so it goes from 0-1 instead of 0-127. about halfway turned up the effect will come on.

Hi!

Thanks for the fast answer.

TheDrop, you're right, but the effect I wanna use is the auto-filter.

Dreamr, I guess I'll try out the 'hard' way then :D.
Do you know where I can find this tutorial ?

It's not part of the tutorials integrated to Ableton, is it?

Cheers

You can use clip envelopes to automate the on off button to.

i don't think so, work in arrange, but not in session (sadly, another exemple of non transparency of booth)
so need indeed to prerack the fx and make a knob shortcut to on/off.

There is a very easy way to do this using IAC drivers (or the Windows equivalent). Check out Tom Cosm's vids:

Part 1
Scrub to about the 12min mark and you can watch him turn a flanger on and off, lol

Part 2
I know device on and off is covered here as well.

I came for the
But stayed for the :x
