Selling music directly through itunes or through cdbaby?
Selling music directly through itunes or through cdbaby?
I'm wondering what the best route would be if I wanted to get my music on itunes, amazone, etc.
I plan on creating my own independent label to release my music, but I don't know if I should apply to become a content provider on itunes (looks like it takes a long time) or go through cdbaby which says they can have my music on itunes in 2 days (after review).
I was just wondering if anyone has experience in this area and what you recommend.
Thanks

I'm not saying tunecore is right or wrong about anything, but I DO say that a blog on the internet doesn't mean shit. If you believed every blog post on the internet you'd be in a bunker right now without any connection to the internet and certainly not reading this. Someone is pissed off at tunecore customer service. I would need a lot more evidence for this to matter.
I have always had great response for them and they've done a great job. *shrug*

I use Reverbnation. Definitely better to go with an aggregator versus iTunes direct IMO, you get into more online stores that way.

With CDBaby you pay a fee once and you're done. ($35 + $20 for the UPC)
From what I remember about tunecore, you pay 9$ a year, every year...
The benefit of going through a distro, even for digital only, is that your music gets to more than just one eTailer.

The bad with Reverbnation/CDBaby etc = no beatport, no juno, no trackitdown
Re: Selling music directly through itunes or through cdbaby?
For the eTailers that are not covered by your distro, you can just work with them independently.IP wrote:The bad with Reverbnation/CDBaby etc = no beatport, no juno, no trackitdown

the bad thing with beatport ..
it is very hard to get in without a distributor (and this f**** store is having all the market in EDM).

Re: Selling music directly through itunes or through cdbaby?
I recently checked out these guys
http://routenote.com/blog/digital-music ... red-again/
mainly because it was for one project - so we'll see how it goes. The tracks aren't online yet (submitted in late Dec).
Looks like swings and roundabouts to me, most of this. Depends on your genre and whether you plan to make a physical CD or not?
But Tarekith is right - go for one of the aggregators. If you check out Amazon's commissions, if you go directly with them as an example, the % is pretty big.

Are there any aggregators that submit to Beatport? I didn't remember seeing any when I was posting my last album, but maybe that's changed...

ReBeat does T.
All in all I found rebeat distribution to be amazing, your stuff ends up on all the major players including discogs and obscure mobile only sites in all sorts of obscure euro zone countries.
If its dance stuff then they do put forward to Beatport, but then I didn't test that as i don't do dance.

one should check out if the dist of choice demands exclusivity and if u then, without issues, use other e-retailers
