An audio example of the kind of sound you're after would be helpful.

Sample an 808 tail, put it in simpler, low pass filter it, done.
You can't get a 90's sounding hip-hop bass from a vst, they weren't using vsts, most of the time they weren't using synths at all, they were using samples.

I usually push the attack up past 120ms to remove the initial transients / click to use an 808 kick as a bass notebeatsbycetty wrote:contakt321 wrote:Sample an 808 tail, put it in simpler, low pass filter it, done.

There was a guy here who was really good at this type of thing but he went even deeper underground and has not been seen since.

Re: TIPS on raw underground hip hop BASS
You could do that too, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Duplicate the track with the samples.
Track 1. Use a high pass filter, set the cutoff somewhere between 100-300hz
Track 2. Use a Low pass filter, set the cutoff somewhere btw 50-300hz. Adjust the Q so there is a boost around the cutoff.
Use your ears (and maybe your eyes on a Spectrum) for Track 2, listen to where the sample's bassline is playing and fine tune the filter to boost those bass frequencies.
Now, use your ears, and lower the cutoff on Track 1 as low as you can go without the combination of both playing together sounding muddy.
You may want to compress track 2, also maybe cut out the parts that don't have any bass.
Now, you may want to have an 808 kick sample playing on 1.1 and 1.3, etc (layering on top of the kick you are using throughout the song) to have an extra bump at the beginning of the bar.
(me personally, I prefer making my own bassline as opposed to doubling and filtering, but Pete Rock, People Under the Stairs, etc did this and got good results)
