I've been using the m40 for years and happy with it. But tempted to upgrade to the m50.

We did a shoot out of these:

Sony 7509 HD
Beyerdynamic DT100
Audio Technica ATH-M50
AKG K271 MKII
SHURE SRH840

There is a video on it here: http://thedspproject.com/the-great-2010 ... -shoot-out

Disclaimer: Its quite long and the sound isnt great but if you want a break down on all these cans check it out.

Spoiler alert! (Long story short I ended up buying the Shures)

Rupert, one does need to wear their best pair of cans to listen to your "shoot out" :D
Well, i did wear my SRH840 and it helped.
No, really, when reviewing pro audio gear, don't you think it'd be nicer to make it sound nice enough?
This reminded me of the video by either EletronicMusician.com or KeyboardMag visiting Ryuichi Sakamoto's NYC studio, you could only hear a thunderous voice of the interviewer and nothing of what Sakamoto answered. Pro audio people...
Mic it properly next time! Otherwise nice and somewhat helpful review, thanks. I would disagree on 7509 in almost every category. I would rate 7509 high in every category(including aesthetics) except built quality.

Yes its terrible I know (worst of any DSP video) and I am reminded regularly. Thats why I put a warning in my post here, on the website, an apologie in the video that is then echo'd again and again in the comments.

I was trying a new mic and we where going to use a treated studio room but a paying client needed it. As we are doing this for free/fun the paying client obviously gets priority.

Question to everyone: Do you think I should remove the video becuase of the substandard audio? I thought the content was worth having up and of interest but the audio does seem to piss people off. Thoughts?

The Sony's are nice the thing with headphones is the same as monitors its quite a personal taste thing, maybe even more so given the comfort factors.

AKG 240mk2 i bought 2 weeks ago and are so comfortable you could sleep in them so no doubt and I like the velvet pads that come as well as leather ones.

For sound I would say im very happy an the semi opened back help sound clearer.
The bass is less but still clear and shows unwanted distortion and artefacts that are missed on speakers which is good.

And there cheap!

Sennheiser HD 380 pro. But you have to stretch them out on your sofa arm rest for about a month, else they'll squeeze your antebellum out your nose. 8O

Sennheiser HD580 for the studio, and pair of fake Sony V700 DJ headset for gigs. Yeah, fake. Some bastard in Hong Kong sold me those on ebay. What to do. :? Either they are fake, or they really sound shitty! Plus the ear foam pads fall of all the time. I once had the Technics DJ1200 headset, which was great quality and great sound for gigs. I miss them. They got stolen.

The HD580 is among my 3 best hardware purchases of all time.
