hello friends,

i just completed a fun project that you might find useful in your productions or at the very least interesting (for me it's mind blowing). much like my circle of fifths chord resource, it's a session file (+ MIDI files in case you're in a different host) you can use to build new sets with, but instead of chords it contains all the Euclidean rhythms of 1-32 pulses over 1-32 time intervals. these clips interact with each other in interesting ways

lots of fun and philosophically awesome to build tracks using these.

Very interesting. I did something similar a while back where I played each fraction a note evenly spaced in one 4/4 bar up to 1/16 notes.

You'd have 1/1 1/2 1/3 1/4 1/5 ...

Very different results, but you may find it interesting

dave, wow that's excellent! beautiful! would you mind if i linked to that tune in my article with a credit? i've gotten some (unanticipated) academic attention and it would be useful to have an example that wasn't in the dance music genre. any other remarks on your process or how you used the Euclidean rhythms would also be included (if you like).

as for the process... erm

i just used the euclidean rhythm as a framework then created variations on it

i was messing about with the longer lengths to try and get away from the counter-rhythms against a basic pulse that the shorter rhythmic blocks tend to lead to

to make it easier to score i broke the 25/8 into 3 packets of 11/8, 11/8, 3/8

X..X.X..X..
X..

repeating each packet twice for each theme

it has four modulations

D dorian, Eb Lydian, G Mixolydian, C Ionian (which is a standard chord progression of 1, 5, 2, 5 ..or something like that :p)

the whole thing then modulates up a semitone

i tagged on another bar of 3/8 for the final chord

i wish i could do this kind of stuff in live.... but i cant... i used notion
if you want a copy of the score to have a look at you can

me and a drummer buddy were having fun with euclidean rhythms too (im a bassist)
some of the grooves you can set up on them are amazing!

ive always been an odd time junkie but these things are really something else

You mean to say you didn't stitch it together in Live, but used some other DAW?

the thought of doing something like that in live....and i love live.... really love it.... but id rather stick pins in my eyes

Really, would you care to elaborate on that? Couldn't you, say assign the midi clips you use to keys, set them to individual quantize resolution, like having a separate step-sequence arpeggiator on every key. Cords could be held with assigning a midi cord plug to some more keys. You could do that in real time in Live. Or am I missing something?

i need to be able to see the four parts at once
i need to see them on staves
i need to control every single note choice and voicing

each articulation is sent on a different channel to a different slot in the sampler to trigger a different kind of sound (staccato, marcato etc... this would need to be done on even more individual tracks in live)

i think it took me about an hour and half to create that piece in notion

to do it in live would be a nightmare

i would have to score it out on manuscript (or in notion lol) then input each part into different clips, on the ridiculously unmusical piano roll

i see music on a stave in my mind... not a piano roll

live has its strengths ... but not for creating music like that imho

But if a clasical musician can do this in real time, so can we. Im talking about using Sessions sequencer functions (follow actions) for the most part. Not constructing it in the piano roll, but you could record the performance into one. With the help of midi foot pedals, and normal midi controllers. A lot of practice is needed of course, but not as much as doing it in real time on an acoustic instrument. I believe it is possible to do this in real time, without looking at the screen.
