Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
Create a midi track.
Add simpler.
Add an open hihat sample.
Set simplers envelope to short decay/release time:
Set it so it plays exactly as long as your midi notes plays.
Create some midi clips with notes playing 16ths or what have you.
Mute the channel.
Group the track.
on the group track load the Gate plug.
Open its side chain for the hihat.
Create a rack of the Gate.
Assign its parameters to the Rack Macros.
Create a rack of the rack.
Create a second parallel chain in the master rack:
Duplicate the chain inside so you get 2 in parallel.
Delete the Rack inside chain 2.
Set one master rack macro to fade between chain1 and chain2:
Open the master rack and X-fade the chains.
Assign the chain selector: this will be the dry/wet.
Assign macros on the master rack to whats on chain 1s gate rack.
Rename and save this group track by dragging it to your racks and tracks library, or whatever file system you are using. Right click it when its in the project and make shore its collected and saved with the hihat sample.
Now, anytime you need to "trance" gate something, drag this group track into the Live set.
When its in, copy paste the Gate rack to wherever you want a gate. From here on, copy paste the rack from within the Live set to as many places as you need it. This will keep the patching for the side chaining. If you drag just the rack into the Live set from the Live browser, the side chain patching will be lost. Thats why its best to keep a clean version in the master gate track.
all your gate is belong to us.

Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
Am I missing something here? Are we not essentially talking about a certain tremolo effect?
If so then I suggest using clip envelopes for manipulating the volume of the desired track, much simpler than many alternatives suggested here IMO..

Not as easily changed, however.djwack wrote:Am I missing something here? Are we not essentially talking about a certain tremolo effect?

Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
I got this to work last night, BUT it did not sound the same (when I say sound the same I mean the same sort of 'JUMP OUT' or 'CLEAN' sound) as say Nexus2. Is that the limitations? Are these other tools that have a built in Trance-Gate just better equipped to handle it? Apps like http://www.kirnuarp.com/ or http://www.pentacom.jp/pentacom/arpg8r/ ?sporkles wrote:Achieving this in Sylenth 1 is really easy:
1) Load one of the init patches on page 4 (or a pad sound you like).
2) Under "Misc 1", set "Step velocity" as source, and "Mix AB" as target in the dropdown directly below. Turn the knob next to "Mix AB" all the way to the right.
3) Under Sylenth 1's mixer section, pull both Mix A and Mix B all the way down.
4) In the blue window in the middle of Sylenth's interface, go to the arpeggiator (ARPEG) tab - don't activate it (that is, make sure there's no hatch in the box on its left). Set every second velocity step to 127 and every second to 0 (as a start). Play a chord, and hear how it sounds.
5) Now you can play around with the "time" and "gate" knobs, also in the blue centre window; typically, you want to set "time" to 32.
Remember that you can hook pretty much anything up to a modulation source, so you could try setting filter cutoff, for instance, as the target instead of or in addition to "MIX AB"
The one from pentacom looks very nice and seems like it can do the trick

Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
You don't need a midi arpeggiator, you need an audio effect.
Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
Look, just load Abletons Gate and send midi notes to it. It doesnt get more easy and flexible then that.
Copy this plug wherever you need gating, when the sidechaining is set.

Re: Getting that Trance-Gate Effect
I found this very cool free plugin yesterday.
http://www.araldfx.com/sg1/
Its an envelope follower. It works in the same way as if you had automated the volume in the clip envelope, only it´s much more versatile and comes with some nice preset patterns. To me, its quicker to set up than a sidechained gate and allows for more sublety.
