WTF is SoundCloud player doing to my audio!? clicks, pops..

Post by memes_33 » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:26 pm

so I know the streaming bit rate is hecka low and it can make things sound cloudy (no pun intended) and swishy/ringy, but I'm having a whole new audio problem with the player this time. there are very audible clicks, pops, stutters, & distortions to my audio through the player. I've listened to the track on other players, and when I download the original track from SoundCloud, it sounds fine. I did normalize the audio before posting it, so its probably around 0 db- could that be the issue? some of the hiccups sound like they could be clipping, but others just sound like they are hiccuping or skipping or popping. I know there's a lot of info below 60Hz on there, and I've heard that high-passing audio sometimes helps the quality when streaming at low bit rates- could this be an issue?

Here is the track: http://soundcloud.com/memes_33/wookie-strut

If you have time, you'll notice the audio sounds like its hiccuping as if the buffer can't handle it. If you download it, it sounds fine. I thought maybe I was just streaming from computer with crappy downloads, but the audio hiccups seem consistent every time I play it from any computer. I have tried re-uploading several times with the same (or similar) results. I even went back and re-recorded it to see if it would still be a problem. It is.

If anyone can help me figure out WTF I would be very gracious. It might just be SoundCloud's player and this track don't jive with one another, in which case I'll bitch to them. But, for now, I'm dumbfounded, so I'll just bitch to ya'll...

Had the same thing (artifacts that were not in the original) with the last track I uploaded to SC. Never had this problem before. I tried dummy runs in Bandcamp and another online player and came up against the same issue... could be something in the audio that compresses like a dog. Couldn't get any version playing from my computer to do the same thing (not even a shitty mp3 convert in iTunes) so put it down to online audio compression bollox.

yeah, i suppose i should try it on another player. i'm going make a mix tonight and not normalize it- perhaps there are some intersample clips going down. thanks for the useful info!

Normalising could be a problem.

As I understand it, as you compress with MP3 there is a small raise in level. The higher the compression, the higher this effect and if there's no overhead, you get clipping. SC re-convert when they process your track for streaming, presumably at 128? Anyway, you should leave a decent overhead when you are expecting the output to be MP3'd

so I re-recorded last night, pumped the mixer outs so the audio peaked around 1.5 dB shy of clipping. I added 1 dB of gain after the fact, so I still have 0.5 dB of headroom. I replaced SC audio but am still getting glitches! It seems like they are not as pronounced, but still, WTF? I'm at -0.5 dB, have not normalized, have not mastered, and its still sounding like shit- what happens when I do send this to get mastered?

still haven't tried it on another streaming player- I guess that is the next step...
