Need another audio interfacer for mixing only.. Quality???

Post by Rabalder » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:39 pm

I record all my stuff on the other side of town, but mix it at home. I have a Fireface UC rackmounted in my performance setup which I use for all recordings.
I used to bring my fireface back home each time I needed to mix something, but that turned out to be very impractical in the long run.
So now I want to get a "mix-at-home-interfacer", but Im not sure how big of a deal the quality is since everything already is recorded with the fireface!?
Would getting a "normal" cheap interfacer have a negative effect somehow?
I basically just need it for hooking up a pair of KRKs. :|

Just get something cheap - decent quality but minimal functionality - I would be surprised if you could really tell that much difference on average/low end studio monitors.

If you want to spend some money - spend it on the monitoring and room acoustics.
Nothing to see here - move along!

I use an Echo Audio PCMCIA IO card for a similar setup. Works great!
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

Thanks. Thats good news.
Ive spent way too much money on my performance setup, so I dont really have anything left.

I agree with the low budget for playback plan.

I'll throw this out there anyway because I have one, love it, the price was right, its even cheaper now, and you might be able to find other uses for it...

if your mixing ITB and not stemming your stuff out to a hardware mixer, summing box, etc.. then you don't need alot of in/outs so get a nice 2 in/out card.. I'd say look out for a nice apogee duet since the V2 just came out.. I went once from a m-audio to a RME in a untreated room using mackie monitors and the DA conversion to me made a difference..

I just remembered that a friend of mine is borrowing my NI Audio kontrol 1 (though I sold it).
That could work..

Any objections?

What about that cool guy that secretly likes tiesto and deadmau5 that recommended the apogee duet.

i would say it depends how important your mixes are for you..when they are just demos and edits to be mixed later you can use any interface..when you really mix on them the best available is just good enough..

i think thats quite the market theese little appogees are aiming for... you cant do much recording or midiwise with them and the breakout cable is dreadful..nothing you really want to use on the road even when its small enough to fit in your pocket...

Seconded - it got a bad name initially as the drivers were rubbish but I've had mine for a year and it is excellent quality.

As a bargain monitoring solution it is superb, balanced connections with a big analogue volume control for main monitors plus a dim and mono-stereo button and separate headphone volume control, all wrapped up in a great table-top form factor :)

Echo Audio stuff sounds great. Lots of RME fans say it is the goto option for low budget.

Drivers are rock solid. Been around for years.

Audiofire stuff works great.
