That shit only matters if he wants to be Justin Bieber.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we've been trolled. 3 pages of this thread and the OP only had one post. That's great.

It's still worth discussing, troll or not.
From my observation, success in music has very little to do with its quality. If you have the right looks, clothes, connections, logo you can be a superstar DJ. You have to be willing to live where the action is, you have to rub elbows with people in the industry, be seen everywhere etc. Just be able to make passable tracks with some generic girl singer singing simple lyrics over the beats. If you spend 90% of your time perfecting your productions you're wasting 90% of your time.
This is not only true in DJing but all facets of commercial music.
Think about this. Where chops matter most is in jazz and classical. And what genres are less financially lucrative than those?
YMMV.

Oh, jazz and classical music can be very lucrative. You just have to be really good.rasputin wrote:Think about this. Where chops matter most is in jazz and classical. And what genres are less financially lucrative than those?

I think its nearly impossible to be the judge of your own talent. I at first had ambitions of being a pro, but later I realized that if I see it as a hobby, it will take my music much further than if I have too many ambitions. You get rid of the pressure, and thats good for yourself and for your music. If it happens, great, if not, it won´t have taste of personal defeat.

Spend one or two years in organising really nice parties in your area.
Socialising sometimes is more important then be a Genius. The People
around you will start look in a different way on you. You will not be
the midi-wired-cave-nerd without wife and children, but you will be
the chief-organiser of your special parties.
Then suddenly the chief-organiser take the turntables. Make sure you
come up with some really danceable tunes - dont matter if you just
DJ or bring in a covered Melody which worked before on thousand others.
And there you are!
Then let others be the coold dudes who organising events and make sure they will book you.
Step out of your lonelyness and think about what life really is.

Sorry man, but 27 is a good age, I'm 28 and I've got lots of stuff happening. Post some tracks dude!! You on Soundcloud??
Re: VERY frustrated DJ/Producer.
I had to laugh at OP's idea that stopping making music is a conscious thing. It's not a means to an end, it runs parallel to your life at all times. It's not a stepping stone between this part of your life and that part. Sometimes it fades and becomes a tiny line where the only songwriting you do is humming to yourself when you go to work and this might last for months, sometimes it comes into sharp focus and you spend every minute of your free time focused on huge and complex productions and this might last a day or a year or more.
The fact is, if you feel you can definitively stop making music because of something like age or lack of success, I would suggest that no matter how melodic or agreeable the thing you make is, it certainly isn't music in the sense that I perceive it.

Your age has nothing to do with it, there are tons of producers and DJ's that are in their 40's and even 50's!
Focus on your life, let music be secondary but always there. This way, once you are happy, good music should follow.
Sounds kinda cheesy but its true.
