Does anyone use a sepearte computer for making music?

Post by Pinnipeds » Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:30 am

Hi,

I was wondering if people have Live and other music related things on a separate computer rather than your own personal laptop/computer.

I've been thinking about doing this because my Macbook's memory has been growing smaller and smaller every day.

If so, are there any suggestions for a good laptop for music production/Live and for playing live?

Thanks.

I have 2 mac book pros. One I use for work and personal stuff. One only for music, both studio and live performance.

You can guess which laptop i'd recommend...
MBP | Live 9 Suite | Max for Live | Push | MOTU Ultralite | iPad | Analog Modular Synths | Moog Voyager
aka "Tempus3r" | Music | Blog | Twitter | Soundcloud

My new MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2011) is strictly for music. I use a Dell / Win7 laptop for everyday personal use. I treat my MacBook the same way I treat large production systems. You don't test fun stuff on a production system that needs to perform perfectly each time.
MacBook Pro (MacOS 13.0.1) i9 Processor, 32gb RAM, 4tb SSD
(STUDIO I/O) MOTU UltraLite mk5 (w/ADA8200), (LIVE I/O) Behringer X Air XR18
Ableton Live Suite 11 (Live performances), Studio One 5 (Studio Stem Creation)

I have 3 computers. One that I use just for the internet. One that is strictly for music, and a laptop.

I have 2 laptops (old and knackered) that I use for day-to-day stuff and 2 PCs - one as a HTPC and one for making music :).

I used to use one of my laptops but realised a couple of months ago that I had enough spare bits lying around to make a dedicated music PC. Hoarding wires/cables/parts comes in very handy sometimes!

Trusty old Dual Core laptop with tiny xp rev.9 installed 4 gb ram - nothing but music production, no internet, anti virus etc...

Mainly use the wifes pc or daughters netbook for other stuff and of course PC at work...

And...Just inherited an AMD 64 bit gaming tower PC with naff blue lights and big loud fans n shit.... 4 gb ram and a poxy 40GB HDD. Added a silent Ausus 1GB graphics card to it for 50 quid and now play crysis 2 in hardcore mode like a teenager when I should be working on tunes!!!

Now the wife cant decide what to nag me for so all's good....

NB: I originally dual booted the laptop for music/other but found it a drag logging on and off.

If you use a computer exclusively for making music, how can you check your email onstage?

Is you cant afford a Mac get an Asus G series.
Computer games don't effect kids... If Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music

Macbook Pro for Music and an HP laptop for everything else. Keeps it nice and simple.

Works really well, considering mac's one down fall: heavy programing based math tools... -.- Here I use win. But for music, stay away from win unless you wan't to spend hours tweaking it to bit's...

So one macbook pro for music and one hp laptop for math (internet, malware, vira, and other sorts of entertainment)!
- Well... but no!
