shoegaze/dream pop sound

Post by reticent » Mon Apr 25, 2011 4:35 am

Hello all,

I am a big fan of Ulrich Schnauss, M83 - basically music that is electronic in nature but has a shoegaze/dream pop element to it. I'm a beginner in Ableton (I also have Reason) and was wondering how to make shoegaze-y electronic music? I have a MIDI keyboard too, if that helps.

Cheers

Hi fellow shoegaze/dream pop fan!

there are many many ways to create that sound... but essentially you've got to make simple layers seem like complex ones...

i'll share a couple of my fx chain secrets:

reverb into saturation into delay.

redux into ping pong delay on triplets.

flanger into ping pong delay into reverb into filterdelay

saturator into chorus into ping pong delay.

also a big time shoegazer fan...(my bloody valentine, the cure,slowdive...i dig ulrich schnauss and boards of canada on the electronic side)
as far as how to make shoegazer type music.....i dial my bpms down to 85 to 100.....i usually try to start out with a couple ambient tracks....like a chord, reverbed and maybe some delay panned to the right....then the same chord an octave lower or higher not as reverbed panned to the left, played straight for a bar....then looped.....then i try to come up with a melody....usually with a bell sounding piano type deal....
its all about experimenting......live gives you ample tools to go about it, you just kind of have to get in there and play around.....maybe mess around with the preset instruments live has and try to find a couple that sound like, for example, ulrich schnauss...start from there..
anyhow good luck.....the shoegaze/dream pop sound is where its at in my opinion.

Just if your into that electronic shoe gaze sound you should check out this EP http://thelastsound.bandcamp.com/album/ ... ld-fire-ep

It is a mate of mine but the first three tracks here I think are excellent and of that type. The rest of the release is a collage of remixes by others. Really worth a listen.

Shoegaze masters "Light Bright Highway." It's not pop nor is it electro, and the recorded music does no justice to the live experience.

I would say there is no formula to make shoegaze. So many approaches to get to a similar result.

the chorus effect on guitar is a must for shoegaze
and classic slight detuned saw synth pads.

I never heard the term "shoegaze" till m83 but i love this style of music.

here is a band i found recently (more of a song i found as i dont really like anything else from the band)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YuSg4mts9E
The Push / Novation Launch Pad / Novation Launch Pad Pro / Novation Launch Key
/ Launch Control XL / Machine MkII / Machine Studio / BeatStep / Livid OhmRGB / Livid Code V2 / Apc 40 MKII

no computers or synths

20 Copies of Ableton Live Lite.

one thing I've learned to do to dial in a guitar tone on my Line 6 Pod is to record an acoustic signal then send it out of Live, into the Pod and back into Live. then I let it run while I play with the Pod GUI, find a tone, save it then play the part again if needed. kinda like that guy in the pic is doing but my hands are free and I'm using an emulator. :(

I've been LOVING Rhapsody for finding new bands. anyone that says there's no good music coming out today is only professing their own ignorance.

check out Minipop. the chick's voice is amazing, great song writing.

totally, saw them open for Radiohead back in ~'91. much poppier than Minipop, IMO.

listening to The Naked and Famous - Passive Me Aggressive You on Rhapsody. seems new wave meets electro.

yeah i guess you could call them new wave.
they are all pretty young in that band, i feel they where most influenced by m83.
there are things in some of there songs that are extremely similar.
