Full computer crashes in 8.2.2

Post by st1040 » Sat May 14, 2011 9:00 am

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the latest 8.2.2 seems to crash the complete machine rather than just the
program. It's a bad state when it's one or the other! I'm running a mac on OSX 10.5.8

Never happened to me and I'm on 10.5.8. I had some crashes when experimenting with mfl, insterting api patches pointing to some devices and deleting those devices but that's all.

on OSX and other modern operation systems, "full machine crashes" can only happen when something goes wrong on the hardware side of things. this includes core audio drivers. since applications can only exchange data with the drivers, they cannot produce these crashes by themselves.

+1 - would have said driver/hardware issue too.

You may want to look at a general OS and driver update and maybe clear out any old unused stuff too which is possible on OSX - on windows I would have said nuke it and start again ;)

Also worth making sure the computer doesnt crash whenever its stressed rather than just in Live.
Nothing to see here - move along!

Mr Henke is right but let me add something: 10.5.8 brings a new version of Firewire Audio driver. That was giving me the creeps with my Audio Card, based on CoreAudio.
That went away with Snow Leopard. I always suggest to have a bootable copy with SuperDuper and then test your hardware for sometime before making any changes.
That saved my day many many times. Apple has this nasty habit to improve on delicate components of the Audio architecture without giving a damn to test the basics.

never happened to me, check your config, must be an issue that's related to you audio setup!

Yes, I go and have odd crashes on the 8.2.2 version when just playing Live's Tutorial demo songs. Stopping the demos and trying on open another project, it hangs.

I wish I kept 8.2.1 installer. I uninstalled it when I installed 8.2.2 (dumb move on my part). Now 8.2.2 crashes too often for different scenarios. Yea yea, I'm sending bug reports every time.

It isn't crashing my whole machine, but it certainly crashes a lot more than 8.2.1.

Some interesting post.

With reference to my whole computer crashing and audio drivers I'm at the moment just running standard mac stereo
out, no soundcards no audio setup as such.

Maybe not relevant, but 95% of my crashes are ram related.
This has helped a lot: Close Live everytime I want to open a new project. Open projects by directly clicking on the save file. This saves a few hundred megabytes of ram use, and thus helps prevent a ram limit crash.

same problem here. 8.2.2 creates full freezing, the audio is playing but nothing on the computer works, functions, keyboard, controls. The only way to end this is to hardboot. I have MBpro with Pro40 or FA101.
i think it is definitely a problem with osx10.5.8 and Live 8.2.2. also with the firewire bus. As i only recently upgraded live, and all the problems start. I also have to reboot live a few times to pick up the FW drivers. Tonight i will upgrade to Snow Leopard and hopefully fix the problems.

My problem is when live freezes/crashes the driver of my soundcard is crashing as well and i get a bluescreen (win 7 x64) ;-/ So if live freezes i must restart the pc as fast as possible :/
but i think the problem are the old fucking emu driver (0404 USB).
