Mixing in Ableton (mixing tracks in different original tempo
Mixing in Ableton (mixing tracks in different original tempo
Hi everyone,
I write electronic music in various genres and want to be able to play live some of my tracks by mixing some of their components in Ableton DJ view (or however it''s called). The problem occurs when I try to end one track which is in one tempo and start another which is in another. Is there a way to bypass the general Ableton tempo that puts all the tracks into one tempo???
I hope I am being clear. Basically, for instance I want to play a track in 120bpm and start slowly crossfading into track which is in 90bpm, leaving both tracks in their original tempos.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot in advance!!

i basically said rename the master track scenes by the bpm you want them to play at..and cross fade from one scene to another...i didn't realize you couldn't play two bpms at the same time..weak

as far as i know, you cant run 2 different tempos in live at once.

I think the solution is to put the tracks you want to mix in simpler. One simpler on track 1 with a complete track as a sample, other simpler on track 2 with the other track as sample. This way you the tracks can play with the original tempo in ableton, doesn't matter wich bpm your sequencer is playing.
Hope this helps

That has been the main reason I don't use Live for DJing. You could try playing both tracks with warping off but then you would loose all the sync information and you wouldn't be able to nudge through the clip, either...

Thank you so much everyone for all the information. I feel bad asking on this forum...but, what would be another program good for mixing music - music in different tempos, or perhaps without beats?

Re: Mixing in Ableton (mixing tracks in different original tempo
so your main issue is with the transitions between songs in different tempos?
you could try having only the outro of the song unwarped or write a transition clip that will aid with the change in tempo and get to the next track.

What you described could work but you loose flexibility? What if I want to cross-fade to the next song at another point in time different than the transition clip? You see what I mean?

yup you loose that for sure ..
only way i can think of on that is us an unwarped clip
maybe a non globally synced looper could work too..
but at that point just use proper DJ software

That's what I do. I am a master of the ambient crossfade!bosonHavoc wrote: only way i can think of on that is us an unwarped clip
And, as has been mentioned, you can use other clips/sounds to help in the transition between the main songs. This is an area where you can get really creative. When done right this can be quite magical. My audiences really appreciate the novel approach: not really knowing what's coming next. Sometimes a solid wall of uninterrupted beats for hours on end can be pretty monotonous.
Fact is, lots of the music I play does not lend itself to beat matching.
Re: Mixing in Ableton (mixing tracks in different original tempo
I hear you...My problem is that till I get to that ambient end of the song, the part before needs to be warped so that it can be synchronized with tempo effects. If you were to mix a completely ambient set, fair enough. Not all chillout tunes are beatless!oblique strategies wrote:bosonHavoc wrote: Sometimes a solid wall of uninterrupted beats for hours on end can be pretty monotonous.

What you consider weak, others might refer as "operates as intended".eddiex wrote:edit> i didn't realize you couldn't play two bpms at the same time..weak
Another thought...wasn't the fun of djing finding ways to make two songs line up on beat? That's the whole point of a turn table pitch adjustment. to play two tracks at the same tempo.

maybe tap the tempo in and use nudge to get the one synced with the unwarped audio..
edit...
never mind that is a pain in the ass lol.. then again i'm not a DJ
