So yeah, is this normal?
Mac Book Pro
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Would upgrading my memory from 4GB to 8GB help at all?

Nah, it's all CPU.
Make sure the little 'HI' switch in the upper right corner is off, and try not to use many/any splitters, since that effectively doubles the processing needed.
I've got an i7 in my desktop and some patches will take up a full 20% of Ableton's CPU with it.

You need them all 'live' at the same time? If not, freeze is your friend

I've got a samsung laptop, almost the exact same spec as your macbook, and yeah Guitar Rig is pretty much the hungriest thing I've got.
As simbosan stated, if I'm recording then it's great for tone and I basically flatten after I put the guitars in before I start tweaking anything else. If you're running guitars live, I'd steer away from GR and go for a hardware solution. I plan on getting a Line 6 Pod myself, apparently the tone-shaping and amp-sims are on a par to GR, minus the CPU hit.

The Pod is very good yeah, apart from losing the clean recording. Which is great for embarrassing guitarists btw, that screaming metal solo? Can sound like an epileptic banjo when you play just the clean version. Separates the men from the boys that one =)

Yeah that was great fun when I was recording my band's demo, turning off all the effects when the solo was playing back...great for taming lead-guitar egos.
Good point regarding the clean recording, I was thinking more for live use though. Of course, you could always go in clean and use one of the outs from your interface to go through the pod and back in, giving you both to play with.
