Question regarding sends......
Question regarding sends......
Hey guys...
This probably seems really elementary and I feel like a bit of a knob for asking , but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer anywhere....
My question concerns using sends for effects. I have a bunch of tracks/clips in 4 audio/midi channels. I then have 3 different sends.
Here's what I don't understand...
On one of the sends I have an eq8 where I've mapped out the freq/Q to act basically as a low-to-high pass filter. When I have a Track playing and I put the send up to 100%......I'm still getting the original track playing with the regular eq curve, and the send is just on top of it a bit. I basically just want the send to come through by itself when it's at 100%.......which is what I thought it was suppose to do? How can I do this?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Question regarding sends......
on the right side of the GUI on the lower half there are little buttons that toggle between pre and post. that's pre and post fadder. set then to pre and then turn down the fader for the track.
good sensible question.

Re: Question regarding sends......
okay little follow up here.....
Everything's working as it should...yay! Now I have a follow up question regarding mapping. It seems so make sense to me that the send dry/wet should in this case also be mapped to the clip volume slider. So that with the send is set to pre, as I increase the dry/wet, the track volume is decreased so its all send. However, I already have the volume slider mapped to a fader on my uc-33e, so I can't map it again to correspond to the inverse dry/wet fader. If that makes sense?
Any suggestions?

Re: Question regarding sends......
basically all this was created to mimic mixing desks that people have used for ages. there's a fader for the track and then there's a knob that sends that track out the back of the mixing desk to external effects. picture yourself working in that environment.
I should have suggested that you use a rack instead.
with a rack inline with the track ALL of the audio hits the rack. if you want some dry to get through, create a second rack slot with nothing in it. or use the dry/wet of the effect(s) in the rack.
lots of ways to skin a cat in Live.
as for the mapping, try another method, sometimes we hit dead ends. it's good to know a bunch of ways to do the same thing.

Thanks for the heads up again. I see what your saying, tons of ways to go about things, but each has it's own pros and cons. If I was just using say 2 channels of clips/tracks I'd have things figured out reasonably quickly I think. It's the 4/5/6/ track mappings/programmings that are throwing me off. I guess I could just throw racks on each track, but it seems a little inefficient. Half the fun is figuring it all out anyways

Re: Question regarding sends......
ANOTHER way to do it is to send the outputs of those three tracks to a new audio track. then put the rack in the new audio track.
totally. that's why I like to answer questions on the forum, it helps me hash out what I do and don't know. and I get to think about Live instead of work.matthews wrote:Half the fun is figuring it all out anyways

Re: Question regarding sends......
I'm really liking the logic behind this right now, access to multiple "volume" faders that can be mapped, could be exactly what I'm afterTone Deft wrote:ANOTHER way to do it is to send the outputs of those three tracks to a new audio track. then put the rack in the new audio track.
Re: Question regarding sends......
as a side note, this is a fun trick.
drop the Utility plug in on a send and hit the invert buttons (button of the device IIRC.)
send a track to the send, PRE fader.
with the send set to 0dB (normal volume) and the track volume turned all the way down you can hear the track.
now when you turn up the track the sound from the track goes down.
seeing it work is completely counter-intuitive and trippy.

Re: Question regarding sends......
regarding sends, you can right click on a send to enable a send sending to itself. be very careful when playing with feedback. putting a compressor with an output at less than unity gain can tame things down. then add things like a delay and a filter and all kinds of fun can be had. again, imagine you're working with a real mixing desk and instead of plug ins you have guitar stomp boxes. that's all the had 'back in the day' that lead to the software that mimics what the old guys were doing.
