I read this comment in a forum somewhere. The poster seemed to imply that there was something inherently 'unfat' in the way Live sounds, and that external VSTs were the only way to remedy the problem.

I'm still very much a beginner. Is there any truth to what was said in that post? And if so, what approaches/plug ins do you use to get the desired sound?

I would say choose your forums more carefully. There has been various debates about the sound quality of Live here as well, and even though the quality of argumentation has varied from worthless to excellent, such statements would not fly anywhere here, nor would they in any serious conversation. What does fatness mean anyway to you, to him, to me? Are we talking about the same thing? And how many VST plugins in a chain make it "serious VST lovin'"? And what phase of the mixing are we talking about when this lack of fatness becomes so apparent that this "serious VST lovin'" has to be applied?

I worked in a commercial studio. We had Pro Tools HD system there and Waves Platinum bundle. We used dozens of those plugins in every project. Does that mean that Pro Tools as well needs some serious VST lovin' in order to get the fatness out?

isn't fatness just a combination of harmonics, randomness, air and width?
you would have to add this yourself in all DAWs its just another production technique.

if a DAW sounded fat from the start it would mean distorion of some kind was being added and i would rather have control over that myself.

Yep, in order to get fatness out, you need to tune your bass 5 semitones higher than your kick.
