Best DJ/Production Headphones?

Post by roozy » Thu Jul 14, 2011 9:09 am

Title says it all folks. This may have been asked before, but what are some of the good headphones out there for production use? Price range #100-200.

DJ/production headphones are a compromise. You can't have the best from the both worlds in one set.

I go with beyerdynamics DT 770 Pro for live and studio.

For producing nearly every high-class headphones do a great job, as long as you know them well. Same with Monitor Speakers.

HD25's for both here too. Primarily for DJing, but I don't mind the way they hype things when I use them to write music either. I don't do critical work in headphones, so I don;t mind if it sounds fun while I wear them :)

HD 25 all the way for dj ing and performing. the replaceablility of most parts is a big benefit. i dont like them to much for production as they tend to be more base heavy and things sound a bit different when you move from working in headphones to studio monitors
I am away from the studio a lot due to work and am currently using a pair of AKG K240 which werent too pricey, dont seem to give me too much ear fatigue and seem to have a good translation over to the studio monitors.

shoulda prolly specified.. for production use. yeah i took a look at the hd-25s. obviously i would use my studio monitors, but for late night producing, headphones work much better as i dont want to be blasting shit at 3am. i've also taken a look at the TMA-1's. should i look for headphones with a flatter response? something for the studio + a little on the road listening would be nice.

I love my audio technica m40 fs cans for both DJ and production use. They're not a completely flat response so I always do my mixing on monitors and use my Yamaha ns10ms as flat reference.

Those look nice, selling for $60 over here. I'm looking into the Sennheiser HD 280 pro. I've heard good things about them. As for your Yamaha NS10MS, how would you compare this with the Yamaha's HS50M's?

Well, the NS10Ms aren't active for a start...

I haven't actually heard the HS50Ms, so I can't really comment on any difference in sound.

The NS10Ms are renowned for their extremely flat response and have been a standard in many professional studios for years. To be honest, they don't generally sound great due to the extreme transparency, but I use them to check my mix as a final "sanity check".

A quote that's chucked about a lot is that if you can make your mix sound good/right on the NS10Ms, it should sound good on anything.

just invested in a pair of Beyerdynamic DT1350's
Ferociously expensive, but very accurate. just came back from Ibiza, did 4 gigs for Pukka Up and Space, and they've stood up to the task very well.

I'm listening through a pair of Sennheiser HD-280 pros as I type this. They're fantastic headphones for listening and monitoring. They seem to have a decent sense of stereo width and pretty good sensitivity, but I feel like they're a bit lacking in bass. The bass starts to roll off higher than I would have expected, so I tend to overcompensate as a result.

My bandmate has a pair of Sony HDR 7506's, which are also in the "$100 US entry level great headphone" category, and the bass extends much deeper. However, I don't think they're quite as sensitive as the Sennheisers. I prefer the Sennheisers for most of my sound design and knob tweaking, and I prefer the Sonys for getting the tracks to mesh together better. I'm no pro though, so YMMV.

Other headphones in this category are AKG's K240 headphones, but I haven't gotten to listen closely to a pair of those yet.

Hope this helps :)
