What kind of music are you making?

Post by awkword » Thu Nov 07, 2002 10:29 pm

I have to admit that one reason why I was attracted to Ableton was that there was a Live forum topic on Akufen! :D Considering that, and also the software was produced in part by Monolake, I'm very curious to know whay sort of music the "average" Live user is doing? Whenever I've posted my influences on other user group boards, nobody knows who the hell I'm talking about (maybe that says something about the average American electronic music aficionado?):

Akufen
Lawrence
Andreas Tilliander
SND
Ibrahim Alfa
Exos
Phon.o
Diego

Anyway, I'm loving Live! I'm getting comfortable enough to use it in a dj set (as soon as I get a laptop, that is). Cheers.

ColdCut, Amon Tobin, MonoLake, FunkStörung, Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Charlie Haden, Defunkt, Mr. Scruff, 80's Elektro (&) New Wave (&) Industrial, George Clinton, Mouse on Mars, Akufen, Animals on Wheels, Coop, Defunkt, Parliament, ...

(Incidently several of them are notorious Live- (ab)users)

You can hear what I'm making if you go to this thread:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1634

It's kinda ambient/sound collage/drone/noise. At least that's what you'll find it under in HMV

Let me know what you think of it while you're there, no-one else has... miserable lot...

eno/partch/80's electro/joydivision/beatles/sun ra/60's and 70's computer music/acid house from march '89

i just wonder why everyone comes up with akufen over and over....

i know he did some live shows with ableton live (even while i saw him at the vision2002 here in switzerland he didn't) .

his music is far away from what you can get with live. he acribically sets his samples with fruityloops (yes, right, the 'amateur thing') . and i don't think he is the greatest live fan. this must be a marketing stroke by ableton . ?????

if you want to make akufen-style sound, watch out for something else, maybe a sequence based software ?

(btw, I'm not taking this pêrsonal in no way .... just my2c)

Think there is a difference between "who is influencing you" or "what do you like" and "wanting to sound like" ... (Akufen's stuff is an inspiration for me, without that I want to sound like him ...)

What music are we making?

Post by amwintx » Fri Nov 08, 2002 3:58 pm

I am excited to see some of the new multitrack recording features in Live 2.0 because we have been using Live to record/loop live musicians for many months now. I have actually created a special website about the music we've been creating specifically with Live. You can check it out here:

Look forward to hearing other's music as well!

does anyone know where i can get that akufen live set that was availible for download a while ago? i've actually never heard the dude, just read about his microsampling technique, so i'm curious to hear what the guy sounds like. that and live electronic sets are always informative to the budding performer.

if you can't find it his album my way is one of the best albums of 2002 and then you can get a good idea of what he's up to.

I can never make a kind of music. One day I'll break out my Double Bass and go the free jazz route, another day and I'll be writing electro. Sometimes I wish I had more focus.
