motu 828 mark 1 - still a good buy for ableton?

i'm looking at buying a motu 828 mark 1. is this a solid unit for use with ableton or should i save up for the mark 2. either that has any body got any suggestions for a rack mounted, firewire unit [must have at least 8 inputs for my external synths].

whats the price difference gonna be for a MK2???

for what its worth im running a MK2 with a PC & ive not had a single problem with it since I got it (8 months ago)

My laptop was from Carrillon though so I dont know if that is making it more stable, I dont know what spec board (chipset) or anything it is in the laptop either so maybe that is making a diffrence... dunno, like I say though solid as a rock for me..

mark1 is still good, but i find the main draw-back is that you can only monitor 2 channels at once. So if you have alot of gear you can still monitor all channels, only through your daw and with the latency of your buffer size added. But it is still solid. You can also check out the motu traveller, which is a portable sound interface(uses batteries) with all the specs of the mark 2, for a very reasonable price

I had one and was very satisfied. Solid little unit, good osx driver.

Only 2 mic preamps, max 48kHz A/D, not firewire buss powered. Moved to Metric Halo Mobile I/O.

Sold the 828 a few months ago for $400- any more would be too much.

The drawback is indeed that direct monitoring is only possible for two channels at once.

I had a 828 Mk1 for a year or so, to be honest I found the converters were not as a good as more recent interfaces - the sound after recording, esp with analog sounds, sounded a bit 'flat'. Sold it recently to get a RME, there was a big difference. I think the MkII has good converters though.

The biggest drawback would be that I think MOTU has ceased support for these units, which means no more driver updates for future OS's.

oh man- I just got the TRAVELER- and it is the best thing ever. it is BUS POWERED. (you dont need to plug it in!)javascript:emoticon(':o')

What about hot-plugging? M-Audio advises against it for its bus-powered FW interfaces. How about Motu?

yeah- you can't daisy chain peripherals to it unless you plug it in or use an optional battery pack (COOL!). on a side note, it will expand any motu device including the 828 mk1

I hot plug my 828 mk2 all the time with no problems or issues. However, if I hot plug my M-Audio Ozonic, it will not work.

guitar center for 750 (or 850?) i bought some other stuff while I was there in a hurry, so I can't really remember... it was their only one.
