Is Guitar Dead?

Yes, I hate to say it but it needs reviving quickly! Old fashioned instruments suck!

No, even though a new version ain't been released since... Live 7? (and that only tunes itself which I could do fine already).

Don't really care, I lost interest a long time ago (around Van Halen's heyday).

yep. pretty amazing. Dweezil played a long solo over a video of his dad playing the same notes. Bozio was a great entertainer. dorkiest sausagefest concert I've ever been to. shredding is just guitar masturbation. sure it's technical but at the end of the album it bores me.

"guitar bands are on the way out?" that's retarded. I've never seen kids take a liking to piano, most people try guitar at some point. what else are you going to base a band around? I see it more there are fewer and fewer bands that don't introduce synths to the mix. this forum has its head up electronic music's ass.

guitar is alive and well ...last I checked ..
in fact ..it's a ways bigger market than synths..
and tbh... why would anyone want it dead?
it's got no enemies ...

I'm not sure if there's less synth's in bands as such, but I think electronic music has separated more from rock bands to a certain extent. The a lot of guitar only bands, but in the "age of the DJ" a lot more stuff is electronic duos or solo artists in a DJing style too. There's still great rock/alternative bands with synths out there too, but many "bands with synths" are now wholly electronic acts. Whether people categorise the latter as bands or DJs/Controllerists/etc can be a fine line sometimes.

Personally I love the mix of electronics in acoustic instruments, you can add loads more layers.

the guitar is more phisical, when you play the guitar you make something phisical, it is like singing: your mind gives music an action, so there is less distance between music (mind) and sound (the gesture, the action, the effect of music). Electronic instruments are something different: there is a distance (the sound has a latency). Electronic musicians have MIDI rather than strings... synth music is more mind related, guitar and voice are body related.

Once Ilya perfects their guitar libraries for Kontakt, guitar will officially be dead.

Piplodocus - agreed. I meant more and more rock bands are using synths.

I was thinking of bands like Silversun Pickups, Death Cab, The Strokes, Minipop, Arcade Fire (maybe, they have their own string section and a huge core group) and other current rock bands that slip synths into the mix.

come to think of it I don't know of anything that's really been phased out. maybe the use of a turntable to scratch with, that was a bit of a fad. the Leslie cabinet? organs that have been replaced by VSTs?

the most important difference between the guitar and a synth based instrument is: if you want to play the guitar you have to learn to play music. If you play the synth, you can even watch a porno during the session  just switch on the button... (p-p-push the button  )

well besides all the cliché guitar stuff posted, there are several people who still evolve the guitar. if you are a little into jazz and funk, check out john scofield "überjam" and anything done by charlie hunter.

something REALLY cool is made by austrian band Electro Guzzi: Live techno in a classic rockband trio setting. Saw their bassist at berghain last year - he was amazing! check them out:

hottest live act at the moment, imo.

I so wish I could play keys as well as I play guitar.

If you think synth payers are talentless check out Herbie Hancock!
