Need some advice on my mixing

Post by jagoff » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:25 pm

I am looking for some constructive criticism on my mixing techniques. I cannot get the Hi Hats to sound how I like. Also any other suggestions would be helpful. Not a track just a bounce

How would you like them to sound? What do you think is wrong with them?

the hi hats seem to be lacking clarity and "air" they seem to be heavy and not light, they should float over the entire mix. One thing I am looking for is clarity and better differentiation between the different hi hats.

I know I could be making better use of compression to get all of the elements to gel together and pump with energy. I listen to professional tracks and they just seem a lot tighter than my mixes. I think my compression is sloppy.

I would cut highs on that hihat. It's too bright for such a dark track.

Mmmmmm.........maybe change the hihats for different ones? Sometimes no amount of eq etc can make something sound how you want it if it's not right in the first place.

For me personally I think you need a sound that has more click/hit at the front of the hihat.......more tssssss than just ssssss if you get me .

Or try shortening your closed hihats so there is more contrast with the open ones.

"Air" resides usually in the 15khz to 20Khz range.

thank you for the advice...having more of a transient makes the sample stand up
