is it possible to warp a song from major key to minor?
hi all,
is it possible to warp a song from major key to minor or vice versa?
I'm sure Melodyne DNA could do this (to some degree) with individual audio stems. but is there a program around (Ableton or other) that could apply a global change to a master-bus bounce (aiff or wav) of a track? (so global modulation)?
just curious : )

This sounds like a hard problem. The trouble is that voice leading is different in minor keys than it is in major keys, so even if it were possible to change every instance of one particular note to another, that wouldn't be good enough. Instead, it would be necessary to analyze the harmonic structure, find the closest analogy in the other mode, and then change notes selectively to produce that structure.

Being as that a major key is made of multiple voices "frozen" into one, it would seem fruitless. The only way this seems possible would be if you had the original stems but even then its unlikely, unless each and every note was recorded seperately.
Perhaps by layering duplicate clips and getting gritty with a eq8 and spectrum could help that note drop enough.

Perhaps just go to its relative minor and thunder away on that as a root.
EG: C major ? Nah, can't you hear my pounding insistent A bass? This is Aminor we are listening to!
It may work, depending on the song.
If the song is complex then it will be unworkable hell, but a lot of modern stuff sits solidly on a limited chord structure. Who knows, it might work.

if the song is in midi format it is possible (because MIDI is still music)
If the song is in audio format it is not possible (because audio is only sound)

Re: is it possible to warp a song from major key to minor?
cheers guys.
yeah interesting thought.
was just wondering out loud, really : )
the relative major>minor makes sense (C>Am example) too
PS and i meant audio tracks. no midi.

if melodyne DNA would work as a transformer of sound into music, it would be the third revolution, after midi (1983) and VST (1997). But i doubt it really works, apart unique poliphonic instruments (piano, guitar...) and not always, alas One must know music to use it, it is not an automatic process. It is more like a restauration, very difficult.

Don't worry, audio tracks can still be music.
Re: is it possible to warp a song from major key to minor?
how can audio be still "music" if you cannot warp it from major key to minor, for instance? ... Because it "sounds like music"?...

Look up some Melodyne videos on youtube, 9V, it IS actually possible! So, yes it is revolutionary.
I tested it out out of curiosity on an old tape recording from 4 track days with at least 4 guitars and 4 vocals. It does a really good job.

i tried it, and it would be revolutionary if it was possible. Something for Nobel Prize. But it is just a clever way to interpret phisical events (sound) and codify them into midi events. Nice, but not enough to say "audio now is music" Audio is still sound, alas.

Audio to MIDI converters do exist. I'd sell you mine if I new how to extract it from my brain.

It's possible-ish, as stated, with Melodyne, etc.

audio to midi converter = sound to music converter
