Arpeggiator & Ableton : Detroit/Deep Techno/House

Hey everybody!

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to use the ableton's arpeggiator to make some kind of "percussive" melody ?

This can be a good example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSkXFR95tQk but I am sure you know what I am talking about!

I am not really used to the arpeggiator, only used it for some "classic" melodic stuff (playing some long notes with a 1/16 arpeggiator, as example)

I am not sure if the basic native Ableton's arpeggiator can do it, or if some more complex ones are needed...

I hope you guys can give me some tips on how to work to improve me in this way!

In my opinion, Chaos theory always produces the best art and music.
Trial, error, experimentation and basically just f*cking about!

The Live Appreggiators straight out of the box (dragged-in) can be a bit stale. Mess about with settings to make something out of the norm.

Never tried it, but what about trying two appreggiators inline? It might give a more random and different sound.

Also, some pluging synths come with their own appreggiators/stutters in there so you could try running them at the same time too.

I Forget where I found the tip but I had some awesome sounds comin' out of an Ableton chord device placed after an arpeggiator/2 arpeggiators
I can't be certain but I think Omnisphere had an orgasm

it sort of sounds like 16step sequencer more than a basic arp. i recommend using a chord device before an arp, than maybe another couple of chord/arp processes in parallel... then outside of this group rack a scale device to pull it all together.

Vanguard offers both a an ARP and TRANCEGATE
- there's also GLIDE too for sweeps inbetween notes too

There's no presets that are the same as the sound you posted in your youtube video.
Read my initial reply.
You will find a key/chime sound in their presets SURELY! if not you can tweak ALL parameters to create a sound similar to what you want.
Then use the TRANCEGATE and ARP to get the Arpeggiated sound. You can try throwing in an Ableton Arpeggiator in there too.

You are not going to get that sound 'straight out of the box' though.
I'm sure that the artist who's song you linked probably didnt get that sound straight out of the box either - and that's what makes it so unique and special.

Search online, there are Vanguard Banks that people have created you can download or buy.
Whilst these might not match the Arpeggiated sound, you might find a sound more like the key/chime sound that can then be Arpeggiated.

You can get some sick percussion patterns if you put multiple arps in a rack with different settings on each. Have a play adding midi effects to the mix like velocity, note length etc plugins.
The real fun begins when you make your percussion instruments (Collision is my favourite but Sampler works well too) key, velocity and decay sensitivite... Madness I tell you, madness.

Here's a loop I created using a 1 bar midi loop with a single note press and a single collision instrument.
