So I am starting to look for a good mixer that I can use to record live music in Live but I am not sure how to distinguish between the mixers that send a composite signal vs a mixer that keeps each channel separate which can be sent to each channel within Live...
what am I looking for?
thanks

Only you knows.what am I looking for?
by the way, a "mixer" is actually designed to MIX things
if you want to record separate channels in live, just buy a good soundcard with enough inputs, and your mixer will be Ableton Live. you can get some midi controller with faders and pots like any hardware mixer, that will control the virtual faders and any fx you put in your ableton mixer.
cheers
