Basics of mixing Progressive House?

Post by pokaichiam » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:23 am

I'm a huge fan of progressive styles, from house to trance.

I wanna make my own mix to listen to or show my friends via cd/mp3

I'm a complete amateur!

I've downloaded ableton live demo/trial

Can anyone point me into the right direction - tute/guide/step by step methodology?
Especially mixing progressive house or trance?

Thanks

PS i want to learn as fast as possible as a mate has a birthday next week and we both love the same music, this would be a good present

Are you talking about making a DJ-mix? Or mixing a track?
If it's the first I suggest you check out www.abletonlivedj.com
I suspect a week is not enough time though to even cover the basics if you're a complete beginner.

Rules for mixing progressive house

1. Pick the best tunes.
2. Pick the best tunes.
3. Pick the best tunes.
4. If you mix them even vaguely smoothly it will be awesome.

Oh and if what you want is a simple dj mix - which I don't mean in a disparaging way, because it's quite sufficient for parties and clubs all over the world! - I strongly recommend using Traktor instead, it has a far more intuitive and better dj workflow. Ableton only comes into its own for more complex stuff.

Oh, hang on, did you want to record the mix as a birthday present? I thought you meant you wanted to dj at his birthday. In that case Ableton isn't such a bad choice.

Make a set with two tracks, one assigned either side of the crossfader. Put EQ3 on each one. Drop all the tunes straight into arrangement view on alternate tracks. Make sure they're warped correctly. Use automation on crossfader/eq. Render audio to disk (remember to normalize).

Check the manual for more details on any of the above instructions.

thanks guys much appreciated...

Yes i wanna make a dj mix cd, or setup a desktop and play at the birthday party if possible. Of course it wont be great, but it is a hobby of mine i would love to learn

I got a huge list of tunes, My aim at the moment is to mix tracks so they play seamlessly like a live performance, but this would help in making my own cd as well

any more more tips/ideas/guides would be great
