Glitch http://illformed.org/plugins/glitch/ but it's for Windows only...

Does anybody know of a similar plugin preferably free and for Mac?

Don't know of a free one but i really like this: http://www.defectiverecords.com/majormalfunction/ it's $25, works out around £15 I think.

The perennial search for a glitch plugin!

If what you are looking for are random, but rhythmically applied, FX such as reverb and beat crusher, etc., I'd suggest you check out this useful tutorial from Mr. Bill on Glitch FX. It can show you how to do this using chain selectors and dummy clips in Live. It is long (24 minutes) but it will save you some money!

Mr. Bill takes 10 minutes just to set up his tracks, he starts to create an audio rack in an instrument rack then back tracks, and then I pull a nail out of the wall and hammer it into my face.

If you're out there, love ya Bill and it sounds great! But any chance someone could summarize the Mr. Bill technique in all of 2 sentences so we don't have to watch 24 minutes of it?

Nice racks for glitch effects and more posted there will give you some ideas of how to achieve these effects with Live and thus save money.

There's more out there... I use racks in live and automate chains..also manual editing in arrangement view and follow commands. A lot can be done via
slicing and playback and rerecord with drum racks so many many possibilities!.. lots of different approaches yield both different & similar outcomes.

Abridged Explanation of Mr. Bill technique:

Make a multi-FX rack by making an Effect Rack with multiple chains and different FX on each chain.

Set up dummy clips (clips with no audio in them, you can just copy any audio clip and turn the sound all the way down) on this track.

Make sure there are at least as many dummy clips as there FX chains in your multi-FX.

In the Envelope of each Dummy Clip, set a different value for the Chain Selector in the Multi FX rack.

Select all Dummy Clips, set follow actions to "Any" and set the time to change on the 16th notes.

Route any audio that you want to "glitch" into the FX track.

You should be able to press play on any of the dummy clips and get a random effect on each 16th note.

Thanks sexface, that's actually a very elegant solution, and a very economical explanation. I used to have a rack on a submix that I'd use with a joystick sweep over a number of chains, but I like the randomization of this idea more. Plus, you don't have to move through other effects on the chain to get to the one you want. Now if ableton would just support discontiguous chain selections: then you wouldn't have to make multiple instances of an effect to double up on your choices...
