Spectrum question

Post by Ill Frequencies » Sat Oct 22, 2011 5:23 pm

I have a simple 4/4 beat with 1 kick that I am eqing with help of the Spectrum.

Why is it that it doesn't peak in the exact same places everytime?
Seems to change a little with every kick.

Yeap, most annoying. Using Voxengo SPAN instead, just because of this.

no question.. 'span' is all around better..
you might also want to check out flux stereoTool (like 'utility' on steroids...)
http://www.fluxhome.com/products/freewares/stereotool
I use them both all the time..

Sweet I just downloaded SPAN and it seems to be doing the job quite well. As for the flux stereotool, I don't really use utility much only to keep stuff in mono but I'll have to check it out. Cheers guys.

I usually just pan things left and right, but what makes flux stereotool better than just panning.
Sorry im not too clued up on the whole stereo imaging thing and am wondering if I should download it or not.

well...
you can go beyond lives' default pan scheme.. (3db "constant power" ..I believe)
and you can also control the width of the field..manually..
..precisely correct stereo tracks that were recorded "un-even"...
check you're master for inconsistencies.. or panning that you might not hear (with an untrained ear.. or because of bad acoustics/environment)
and phasing..
it has a phase scope.. which allows you to visualize what you're hearing...(and also maybe see stuff you're not hearing..)
it also allows you to fade between 2 states of the device (a/b).. which can be nice for morphing a sound..

of course you could build something like this(minus the phase-scope/meters) using 4 utility devices and a rack..
and that would be stupid.. as you'll need to annoyingly move between "chains" to adjust params..
this device is self contained.. and everything is nicely laid out for you..
a must-have imo..

Im on a mac just installed span and gave it a test run...

Installed the .AU version.... clearly introduces loads of crap to the sound.
A/B multiple time with the same audio clip and is consistently repetalbe... trying vst version because had issues with .au version of some plugins in the past and not with vst
