Buying Ableton - some advice please

Post by Bad Lieutenant » Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:26 am

Hi all,

I have been using my friend's PC which has Ableton 8 Suite on it.

I only borrowed it or a week - and that was 6 months ago!

I want to buy my own copy - for my Mac.

Should I buy Live 8 Suite, or should I wait for the new release?

What's the score here? Does Ableton support easy upgrades - i.e. if I buy Live 8 Suite, then will I be able to upgrade to newer versions without being shafted a la Microsoft?

Any advice, pointers welcome...many thanks as always.

Live is on special right now, you can have it for 100$ less than normal price. I figure the upgrade from 8 to 9 will be around 100-150$, so do the math, get it right now!

Live is on special right now,
umm thanks! Where do I get this?

I live in London (UK - not Ontario :)

And thanks for answering the question - I will be looking to shell out about £80-100 per upgrade?

yes, the upgrades are fairly pricey. you can buy online direct from ableton... https://www.ableton.com/shop/categories/full?a=live_buy

Get it now. Who knows when a new version drops. And even if it drops tomorrow ..so what. Live 8 runs great and is stable...now. Besides even if you have to have 9 and you've already purchased 8....they give great deals to existing customers anyways.

if I could go back in time, I'd skip the suite and just get the regualr version.. i guess cuz i have other instruments already but i guess if your starting out, it might be good for you.. i just never use the ableton suite instruments in any of my projects..

Get Live 8 not the suite, you can get other vsti for the difference. Also depending on what kind of music do you play/make. Are you just starting out or do you already own some gears.

I would search eBay. I got mine from there years ago all good and a lot cheaper than other places.

Thanks for the responses! I make acid techno and hard techno. The suite gives me operator and sampler?

One last question: my missus wants to buy me a MBP. question is this:

Will the 13" ( my preference) suffice or should I get the 15" (which I think is clunky)?

Many thanks...

No suite. Wait till 9. Get it cheaper as possible by using upgrade/sale etc. Live's price is too steap as its feature when comparing competitor at present.

Thanks again for your thoughtful responses (not a hint of patronising, sarcasm etc...yet :))

I have used live for 6 months and I mainly use their audio effects plug ins and operator.

I suppose I'll get live 8, then of as a poster says here, I crave operator, I'll get it. I have massive and vanguard!

Thanks again and no doubt I'll be back with more "green" questions...

U can purchase the instruments separately

Either way I would get live 8 now. UKRUSS is selling his. Drop him a pm and tell him I sent u :)

Live 9 could be announced anytime but it will go through months of public beta stages after that.

Have fun
