That helps a lot.
expand the chain view. switch to midi map mode. The whole area of the chain makes a big blue rectangle, which means it is mappable.

Re: can I use midi to control chain selector?
You need to map your CC (any CC) using the quick MIDI mapping feature. It's not like a synth where you send it specific CCs for specific purposes, rather, it's like "pick a CC from one of your controllers, and map that to whatever parameter."
Now, if you're trying to program the movement of the chain selector instead of controlling it via a controller, then you'll want to use either parameter or clip automation. The chain selector's position should show up in the parameter list.

Re: can I use midi to control chain selector?
Yep, any will do. Just pick one that you're not using for anything else, click the MIDI map button (in the top right), click the chain selector (where it's now blue), then send your chosen CC to Live i.e., press the button, turn the knob, whatever. Assuming you're wanting to control it via a MIDI controller anyway. If you're wanting to program it just for certain clips/parts of the track, you can use the above method too.
Re: can I use midi to control chain selector?
just try it. you've been on the web for 7 hours asking people how to do this.

Re: can I use midi to control chain selector?
To be honest, although it may not have been obvious, that's why my initial responses were short and to the point. Also, I was guessing that someone who had 700+ posts on the Ableton forum would know how to MIDI map in Live. If not and it's just something flowdesigner has never done, fair enough. Just a faulty assumption then.

Re: can I use midi to control chain selector?
ouch, and you're doing Max. I haven't touched that for a while but I believe you'd want to hit it via the Live API. ask over in the m4L forum. AFAIK there is no singular CC it responds to.
good luck!
edit - I didn't mean to say it's obvious, just wanted to encourage you to go ahead and guess, take chances, poke at buttons, try things that should work and just might. I find it helps to get through lots of problems to just push through and do what seem to be nonsensical actions. don't be afraid to break things or hit dead ends, be curious, be observant, take a step back and try what might work. designers make interfaces hoping that users will do just that.
my $0.02.
