Live 9 - Prediction
Hey All,
My prediction is that Live 9 will be announced at NAMM 2012 in January. Here's my evidence:
[*]Ableton Live 8 was announced at NAMM in 2009.
[*]It has been almost three years since Live 8 came out.
[*]Max 6 just launched.
[*]The longest period Ableton has waited in between major versions until now was about 1.5 years.
[*]NI has been putting a ton of effort into turning Maschine into a competitor for Live.
I think it's great that Ableton hasn't tried to rapid-fire out a new (major) version of Live like they used to. Maybe I'm wrong, the economy seems to be getting a little better here in the US but everything in Europe and elsewhere seems to be more up in the air. Then again, I'm a producer, not an economist
I'm really hoping I'm right, and that they're either going to confirm or deny my additional suspicion that the next wave of Ableton-specific hardware is coming out soon as well. I just sold an older piece of equipment I wasn't using anymore, so I'm either getting an APC-40 in January or waiting until the next thing comes out.
Cheers,
-ix

Yeah, I know, it's stupid, but they're positioning it as the center of your studio, you don't need anything else, blah blah blah...Komodovaran wrote:I'm not sure how a drum machine can compete with a DAW?
I guess the software also does sequencing but after they killed Kore I'm not touching Maschine with a ten foot pole.

Re: Live 9 - Prediction
A couple years ago NI said they were no longer attending NAMM, and were going to rely on their website for showcasing. I thought I remembered Ableton saying they were no longer doing NAMM shortly after that, and they didn't attend the last shows.
I'll be surprised if thats where they reveal any Live 9 info, but I would not be surprised if they release some info around the same time.

You summed it up. Love NI, but as always it seems the bean counters there are ruthless and have a scorched earth policy about backwards compatibility.looprication wrote:Yeah, I know, it's stupid, but they're positioning it as the center of your studio, you don't need anything else, blah blah blah...Komodovaran wrote:I'm not sure how a drum machine can compete with a DAW?

I'm experiencing some issues with Kore in my other DAW Digital Performer now, and I doubt that by the time they roll out the 64 bit version it will be a stable and workable solution for performance. I based my live instrument setup around Kore as it was very arguably a better solution than Racks, but that's turned out to be a mistake as soon minor bugs will pop up that make it useless for a live situation. I don't think that's debatable.
I give mass kudos to Ableton for not working like that. Let's hope that Cycling 74 and AAS remain good partners.

Re: Live 9 - Prediction
Oh, and I somewhat agree, that Live 9 will come out this coming year. My guess is an announcement around the time of NAMM, and a public beta by May or June.
This gives them all the North American college students on Summer break to do their beta testing for them.
Logic and Digital Performer are also due for upgrades to Logic X and DP8 respectively, been over two years for those two as well. Cubase, Pro Tools and Sonar got upgrades recently if I recall correctly.

Re: Live 9 - Prediction
I thought I read somewhere that they were in Alpha right now, meaning that Beta and thus a release date can't be too far off.

i could care less about when they're releasing it. But i'm really stoked for it. Ableton being quiet for this long is making me anticipate something really raelly really big

Re: Live 9 - Prediction
I reckon they'll probably say something in Jan...
They used to come out about every 1.5 years. This one's been 3 years, but it'll be 64-bit so takes twice as long to program as the 32-bit one innit!

I'm no Nostradamus or Edgar Cayce, but i predict the following:
1. when ableton does announce ableton 9, look instantly for a thread about the shortcomings of the program and future wishes for Live 10..
2. 49er's will upset Green Bay in the playoff's..
