When you're genuinely unsure if the cake is ready for icing or not, why not share a little of it with others to see what they think?

You don't have to plonk it straight on the main display shelf of a boutique patisserie or anything, just pass some slices around at a small dinner party - amongst people who have experience baking or eating similar cake - listen to what they have to say, and keep an open mind.

There aren't really any foolproof recipies as such, but the more you know about how you want it to taste, the easier it will be to know when it's ready.

That in mind, I believe this comment could be particularly helpful:

Good luck!

Great replies guys... the analogy is not really necessary as long as we all know what we are talking about. The analogy was meant to emphasize the perspective from which I wanted to approach the situation. Sometimes this is the only way that our language can facilitate adequately what we really want to say. Like "Sweet" music, "Sticky" rhythm etc.

we are just talking about cake..right?

don't forget to excercise a lot if you're gonna eat all those yummy cakes ..
remember ..cake baking is all about quantities ..and keeping time ...
if you're not precise the cake is ruined!

And keeping the temperature constant...ah mean keeping it hot throughout the baking process.

if you feel the cake is done - trust that feeling - its an unique taste that will get lost when you put it back into the owen

and no, dont put any additional crap like cream on top of it - it taste like shit imo

Im baking bread, not cakes for the most part. Kids prefer cakes though
