As for the fuzzy distortion sound, I remember reading a long time ago that he didn't use distortion for that sound on the older records. It came from plugging straight into a board and overdriving the mixer. Wasn't a pedal or plugin but a technique.

He used a lot of Pluggo effects on fragile. (comes free with m4l)

"I should add that I didn't join NIN until I was almost 30, didn't start composing scores until I was almost 40... and didn't get married until I was in my mid-40s.... so there's that."

That will probably be the most reassuring thing to remember for a little while:p
