I'm on shaky ground if your first language is German. However...

They may not be German in origin but they're in common usage in the German language. Bit is often used in composite nouns. e.g:

Bitfolge {f} [comp.] - bit rate
Bitmaske {f} [comp.] - bit mask
Bitprozessor {m} [comp.] - bit processor

WIG is the German name for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Tungsten is Wolfram in German, Inert and Gas are the same in German and English, hence WIG.

WIG-Schweißgerät {n} [mach.] [techn.] - tungsten inert gas welding equipment

It could be the name of the developer's cat for all I know. I'm just trying to counterpoint all the negative posts about a name.

Anyhow, whatever bitwig really means (or doesn't mean), I choose to think of it as a bit welder, just to spite you all. :-)
as for a stupid name, i agree with sony being equally stupid:
The german pronounciation of "Sony" is "so nie"
nie = never
so = like this / that way

So basically for a german, Sony sounds quite like "Never do it like this!"

I think it's supposed to be pronounced

bi-twig

To rebel against music as well as American politics.
