Getting somewhat back on track. I've been watching quite a few of the Bitwig vids on You Tube and I have to admit I'm quite impressed with what I see. On a bit of a side note, and of course this is pure speculation, but is there a trend taking place with these type of software companies and what they produce? For example, NI creates Maschine, then a controller that is a tool for it. Ableton creates Push (after we have the Launchpad and APC's) so in time do you think Bitwig will create a hardware device for their software?

After the responses, how about some badass dog pics? I love Doberman Pinschers!

The Bitwig demo video from Messe done by audiofanzine is really cool, there's some pretty nice integration with the Nektar P4 Controller.

yeah I posted that a few pages back, but Karl Marx got in the way. However, regardless of Das Capital ... I was pretty impressed with what's shown in the video. I was a little disapointed in the interviewer's short-sightedness "can it do audio to midi?" , really dude? is Audio to midi really what everyone has been asking for, no, no it isn't. Christ!

How about asking them about how the newsted clips thingy works, or how the "you can modulate other devices with the mod-source from another instrument" function that was casually mentioned. Or perhaps the "and you can insert other effects in the feedback loop of the delay" sort of feature ... That's the stuff I'm interested in. It's obvious that their modular system is there under the surface and there is some modularity available in version 1 via linking mod sources/destinations and allowing nesting/linking of device audio paths.

I think the interesting parts are where it differs from what Ableton chose to do, not where it is the same. I'm fascinated by the potential of the closer link between clips and arrangment features, "meta clips" containing sub chunks of audio and midi, using clips to group higher level content. I'm interested to see more about that.

Air my politics?

I don't think so.

I wasn't bothered at all by the Marx intervention, it was interesting. It's not like this thread is a real time report on fast changing facts. It's pretty much one Bitwig fact every two weeks, if we are lucky.

It seems so, their clips can encapsulate sub-chunks of stuff.
It's demonstrated a bit in that AudioFanzine video

My biggest wish is that Bitwig actually has certain live performance oriented features that Live does not.

For instance if you have a MIDI controller or two in Live you're stuck with using the controller to change it's mapped parameters.
To change a mapped performance of instruments you essentially have two choices, either take the CPU hit and use a Rack to switch between instruments or load a new Live Set, which means dead space in a live performance, so iTunes etc. to fill the void. You can use power on/off commands in a Rack to save energy, but the on/off command is itself an issue then, say a Rack has three instruments you want to play live in a song, the only way to make sure the state remains the same is to use the switching feature in Racks to switch the keyboard to the various synths/samplers with all synths loaded and using CPU, an issue possibly.

Mostly, there's nothing intuitive or easy about setting up a Live Set with multiple synths for playing live. Mostly it seams like Live asks you to play the clips as if they were a sampler for an intuitive performance experience.

If Bitwig addressed this they would have me at v 1.0, if not it's just a great competition to what Live does. So far it seems to me that they aren't.

This would be big for me too.
Wouldn't the fact that you can load multiple songs at once in it help solve this problem? Maybe not if you are dumping the song into the current project you're working on but if I'm not mistaken you will be able to open more than one project in Bitwig at once. Maybe I misunderstood and it's more like how you can dump a project into the one you're working on in Live...

I can't remember where I heard this rumor but I heard there will be a nice script available for Push when Bitwig comes out (or that the Bitwig guys were hoping to have one done.) Score. I also like the idea that their going to publicly encourage hacking.

P.S. He asked me to air my politics (d.reamonn.) Should have known i was getting trawled. Thanks everybody for not mercilessly flaming me!

I don't remember any mention of being able to apply a groove at all in Bitwig...

What good is melody?
What good is music?
If it aint possessing something sweet

Now it aint the melody
And it aint the music
Theres something else that makes this tune complete, YES

It dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing
Well it dont mean a thing all you got to do is sing

It makes no difference if its sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm ev-ry-thing you got YES

It dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing

It dont mean a thing
It dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing boy

(Ba ba doo dah doo)

I said it dont mean a thing and all you got to do is sing

(La la la)

Now it makes no difference if its sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm ev-ry-thing you got OHH
It dont mean a thing boy, if it aint got-a-that-a-swinga

(Ba boo ba doo)
