aiff-c files problem

A vocalist I'm working with sent me 6 audio tracks exported from Logic. They're all Aiff-C files. 4 of them load up and play back in Live without a problem but the other 2 give me an error that the file is corrupt or locked. I've tried converting them to MP3s and then I can bring them into Live, but they're just white noise. Any idea what might be going on here?

Anyone have any insight into this? It's become a recurring problem. The only thing I can think of is that it shows the number of audio channels for these files as 6. Does that make them incompatible with Live?

Bingo! Your vocalist is working in Logic in surround and bouncing the audio aiff files in 5.1 surround format hence the 6 channels. Had this problem before when a friend sent his stems the same way and the only workaround was to load the files in Logic and separately bounce the channels in mono. Not sure if you can decode the multi-channel aiff in other programs. You probably need to use Logic.

you don't need Logic, there are various other tools that will split the multichannel audio. Google away!

OK, it looks like Audacity will work. Which of the uncompressed file types is best to export to, to retain original quality? Or does it make no difference really?

Export as AIFF or WAV with the original file's sample rate and bit depth, just make it mono or stereo.

There doesn't seem to be a way to define sample rate and bit depth on the exported file that I can see and the exported file is 37mb (AIFF or WAV) vs. the original AIFF-C which is 167 mb, so something must be getting lost somewhere.

Not necassarily. If the Aiff-C is a 6 channel compressed file, then it's 6 mono tracks that are comrpessed. If it converted to a mono or stereo wav, that could be right. Depends on how it was output...
There's a program called mediainfo that shows you more specific info about a media file, maybe it'll be of some use...

The original file is 24 bit/44.100khz. I'm having trouble finding a suitable format to export to out of Audacity. The uncompressed file formats I've tried so far will not import into Live. I've tried signed 24 bit PCM and U-Law with the header as AIFF (Apple/SGI). Anyone familiar enough with Audacity that knows a format I can export to, to keep it at 24/44.100? Or is there a better tool?
