Hey all, I am currently using only 4gb of p67 ram. My cpu is an i7 2600k overclocked to 5 ghz.

I am about to purchase 16gb of
DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)
Cas Latency 9
Timing 9-11-10-28

should I buy the new ram?

depends on your operating system. which is.... ?

32 or 64 bit?

some OS won't be able to use it.

and 16 is probably overkill. :|

why don't you start by adding 2 GB or 4??

They are virtually giving memory away at the moment - just do it.

Yo mamma's cheaper than DDR3 RAM. ;)

(Had to share that one, can't take credit though)

Is there any benefit to using over 4gbs in ableton? My sets are pretty much all softsynths, I dont think my Ram is ever completely taxed - rather my cpu. €45 for 8gbs is pretty tempting - but thats crucial - is there any real diff to the brands now or could I find it for cheaper?

^ Crucial make good RAM.

the only benefit to using more comes if you actually need more.

Live can only acess 4gb of Ram. (Until it turns 64bit).

The advantage of having more than 4GB is that Live can then have 4GB all to itself, without risk of competing for memory with various background processes.

Some background tasks can have large memory footprints and often wake several times a second to see if they need to do anything - particularly anti virus software.

This can create a kind of memory war with each program taking turns to evict the other and reload it's own stuff into RAM, causing massive amounts of reads and writes on the swap file.
